BLAST FROM THE PAST

That's Jim Holley (YZ mounted) and Ron "Slapper" Haase on the ATC250 modeling for a feature that we did in the July 1984 issue of Dirt Bike. We called it "Wild 3-wheelers challenge dirt bikes". Two quotes stand out, "The good thing about ATV's is that anybody can ride one, the bad thing is just about anybody can ride one!"

Charlie Mullins is coming back!

13ISDE_-0118

Charlie Mullins ‘was’ the hottest commodity in the off-road world. A multi-time GNCC champion, National Enduro Champion and ISDE star, Charlie suffered near catastrophic wrist injuries and ended up having both Navicular bones (also called the scaphoid bone, which has a poor blood supply and will not heal well with continued stress.) This has always been called a career ender (Rick Johnson and Drew Smith to name a couple) but Charlie has recently resurfaced and is training with Aldon Baker (yes Ryan Dungey’s trainer), but more importantly Ryan Villopoto’s, who also came back from a similar Navicular wrist injury. With Aldon’s training schedule and with the help of his Physical Therapist, Charlie is convinced that he will be back racing soon, in spite of the fact that it will be nearly two years since he has seen competition.

mullins_mo003
A 2-time National Enduro Champion, Charlie won on a Yamaha and on a KTM.

mullins
Although he won only one Enduro championship for KTM, Charlie was in the hunt for several.

13ISDE_-4
Being a good motocrosser helped Mullins in his ISDE results. He was notoriously fast and always in the hunt.

CONGRATS AGAIN TO IVAN RAMIREZ!!! NATIONAL H&H CHAMP!!!

Thanks to Mark Kariya for the great shots.

ROBBY BELL WINS ELSINORE GP

101ec82d-93aa-4304-a7bd-5ef579351945

The 2015 Lake Elsinore Grand Prix was officially cancelled at one point this year, as the shortage of water in Southern California meant that the traditional location could’t be used with the potential of conditions would being too dusty. The promoters scrambled to keep the event alive this year and moved the venue from downtown Lake Elsinore to the local motocross track, making for a shorter race course and quite a bit more of a man-made, motocross feel. In the marquee event of the weekend, the Harvey Mushman 100-mile pro race, Precision Concepts riders Robby Bell and Justin Seeds looked to continue their streak of wins – Seeds having won the event three years in a row (’11, ’12, & ’13), while Bell won it in ’10 and ’15.

Mushman 100 Top 5 Finishers:

  1. Robby Bell
  2. Justin Seeds
  3. Eric Yorba
  4. Blayne Thompson
  5. Michael DelFante

STEWART PULLS OUT OF AUSTRALIAN SX

2015_JS7_MEC_LO_05

Stating a lack of test time and needed training time has won out over track time under race conditions, (which JS7 really needs since it was so obvious at the Vegas MEC race that James looked a little gun shy). The team knows he needs race reps in competition to sharpen his confidence level, but finishing testing and getting into his ‘boot camp’ training regime into motion and meeting an A1 deadline is of prime importance. James will still race the Bercy-Lille Supercross

NEW SHORTY DEAD ENDS ANTI VIBRATION INSERTS

DSCF0964
The new “Shorty” dead ends, from BestDualSportBikes, are an answer to the cry from customers who although love the original dead end anti-vibrational handle bar inserts, wanted ones that didn’t add any length. Not only do these dead ends still have the weight needed to kill the vibes at the higher rpm’s, but they still have the lead shot inside the chambers. The lead shot, much like a dead blow hammer, responds to and absorbs vibes at the various frequencies that occur at the lower rpm’s.
To install, you cut 3/4” off of the end of you bar, tap the inside on the bar with the 5/8-11 tap and screw these in. They replace the portion of the bar cut off. You reinstall you grip and throttle and you done. You bark busters now bolt in directly to the shortie dead ends. No more length, no more vibrations through the handlebars and it’s a solid, non-twistable mount for your handguards.

DAVE MCCOY – 2015 EDISON DYE AWARD

My good friend Tom White put together a superb video on Dave McCoy and his contribution to the sport. Dave not only founded Mammoth Mountain, he was a skier, a coach, a motocrosser and a savant for the likes of Jim Pomeroy, Jimmy Ellis, Bob Hannah and Ricky Johnson. Dave has been go-go-going strong for 100-years and this note from Tom White says it all : “Friends, the video that my team produced about Dave McCoy is now open for viewing. Watch it! You might learn something about living a successful life and marrying your best friend and live to 100!

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

wolfHair
I have no clue what I’m doing here, though it appears that food is crucial (looking at my stretched tight Levi’s) and I have a stop watch and a clip board. Must be lap times for a moto shootout. Love the head o’ lettuce!
IMG_0216
The Wolf, circa 1983 on a new KX500, tagged the Green Monster in the Dirt Bike test. Kawasaki had dropped the older KX420 in 1982 and this machine marked their leap into the Honda owned open bike category though the bike had flaws and one of the final quotes in the mag said “Stock, the engine is a fuse waiting for a place to light.” Super Hunky took this phode of me, and to be honest, it continued to catch traction and I looped out destroying the rear fender and silencer. Dag.
