THE WEEKLY FEED: KURT CASELLI- BACK IN THE DAY

A HISTORY LESSON: KURT CASELLI CIRCA 2002

Back in 2002 Kurt Caselli was the son of a full blown desert rat- his dad Rich. Rich raced both desert events and enduros for years, and took his son with him to nearly every outing. Locals can remember Kurt burning laps on a KX65 and this turned him into a dirt biker who had a passion for…moto! Back in 2002 Kurt was just coming into his own as a racer and spent his race time in the WORCS series and the Big Six events that were track inspired. As the tale unfolds we all know that Kurt morphed into one of the ISDE stars of the decade and eventually took on the National Hare and Hound series along with embracing Dakar and Baja long distance racing.

Kurt spent the majority of his racing career on a KTM. He was a 2-stroke aficionado and competed in the WORCS series on a 250. His style was always aggressive moto as he had a flair for the big jumps and burning corners on the Austrian brand that was etched into off-road but was just crawling up the ladder of moto oriented circuits.
Kurt’s ’02 KTM 250 was powered by FMF, a sponsor and relationship that traveled all the way through his career.
Caselli was all about air and this monster leap at Gorman’s Quail Valley track shows his prowess.

2018 Trials Recap

By Shan Moore/Photos by Shan Moore

Pat Smage, your Moto Trials National champ!

Sherco USA’s Pat Smage claimed his ninth national MotoTrials title, coming out on top of a series-long battle with Spaniard Marc Freixa. Freixa dominated last year’s series to win the 2017 title, but Smage put his nose to the grindstone this past winter and came out swinging when the series opened up in Texas. In all, Smage won five of the eight rounds and beat Freixa, who was at one time ranked third in the world, by 14 points in the final standings. Sherco USA’s Andrew Putt was third in the final standings, while Gas Gas USA team mates Bryan Roper and Alex Niederer rounded out the top five.

Marc Freixa, a former #3 in the world came out in second place after a season long battle with Smage.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

The Wolf, Barstow to Vegas 1986. My ride was a KX500 and was a great ride for a high speed desert race. I had it geared to the moon, my buddy Paul Thede at Race Tech massaged the suspension and I hit the line with just under 1000 other racers for the dead engine start to the bomb. In truth, I was a way better enduro rider preferring technical trails to high speed and my results were very pedestrian. The cream of the true desert racer embraced fifth gear wide, hucking whoops at 90 and blitzing dusty canyons with near reckless abandon. I cringed (and still do!) at all of those obstacles.
It doesn’t get any better than when your good friend (Charles Halcomb) points out your less than stellar finish and the copious amount of nose goo dripping down your mug. Yee haw.
