TWO-STROKE TUESDAY: 1989 CR500 BUILT BY LEE MCCOLLUM

Lee McCollum’s restored 1989 Honda CR500 is front and center on this week’s Two-Stroke Tuesday brought to you by Boyesen. We feature items from GoPro, Giant Loop and Pro Circuit in 2-Stroke Hardware, and the 2-Stroke Theater section has a great mix of pre-mix burning off-road machines. Don’t forget to click our exclusive link to the only new-generation aluminum-frame Honda CR500 build that currently exists on the planet at the bottom of this post.

1989-Honda-CR500-OverallRight.jpgLee is known mostly for his work on Suzuki factory machines, but he has a passion for two wheels and his 1989 CR500 is amazing to look at in person.

1989-Honda-CR500-EngineLeft.jpgYes, there might be a few parts internally that are a little tricky to get for the average Joe but most of Lee’s restoration features OEM Honda CR500 components. As you can see the attention to detail just in this picture is next level.

The rear hub was coated to match the rear brake caliper and stay with the classic look Honda had during those years. Spokes, nipples and rims all got upgraded with Excel products.

1989-Honda-CR500-FrontWheel.jpgSame story up front with hubs coated to match the brake caliper and Excel upgrades. Check out the coating on the lower fork lugs.

1989-Honda-CR500-TripleClamp.jpgThese could be factory upper clamps, but Lee got very tight lipped when we started asking questions about them. To say we didn’t get a straight answer is an understatement. We know it looks cool!

The look of a Pro Circuit Factory Sound 304 silencer on a big 500cc machine just screams horsepower. These complete exhaust systems are still in production by Pro Circuit today.

1989-Honda-CR500-ChainGuide.jpgAttention to detail that makes a factory bike a factory bike. Lee has built enough race machines over the years that this is second nature to him.

Honda-CR500-OverallLeft.jpgWe stared at this bike for half the day before we actually started taking pictures. If we can just talk Lee into letting us ride it, the fantasy would be complete.
