BLAST FROM THE PAST: CLASSIC RD- RIBI FORKED

Roger DeCoster seemed to have an affinity for the unusual and felt strongly the the Ribi fork provided an advantage over the telescopic front damper. In the late 1970s Valentino Ribi, an inventor who had a passion for Moto felt that the diving effects in the bikes geometry when the [telescopic] fork went full travel was deterimental to the machines handling traits.  Roger tested the Ribi fork, a linkage fork that mated two ‘normal’ shocks and when compressed maintained the desired front wheel arc and therefore, smoother, more precise handling. Roger DeCoster felt that  the  fork gave him an advantage and raced the 1979 500cc World Championships using it. Once Roger defected from Team Suzuki and moved to Team Honda, he coaxed Honda to buy the rights to the quadriladeral  design. Eventually Honda shelved the idea.

Pro Circuit’s new linkage system for the 2021 KX250 and 2019-2021 KX450 brings the bike’s handling performance to an entirely new level. The stock OEM linkage system  tends to be harsh and stiff at the beginning of the stroke and gets softer as the rear wheel goes deeper into the stroke. With PC’s new linkage system, it’s plusher at the beginning and stiffens up as the rear wheel goes deeper into the stroke. This adjustment lessens the need for stiffer high-speed valving, which can cause the rear to feel harsh and deflective. A considerable amount of research and testing for this new linkage system has resulted in a more true-to-weight spring rate to reach the ultimate sweet spot in handling for your new KX250/KX450. Ultimately, the new linkage creates a plush feel while increasing traction. $445.00

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Tecate 500 Enduro- 1979. A two-day 250 miles per day technical romp that rated as one of the classic enduros of all time. This is my team, Team Kolbe Can-Am. I had incredible adventures with these guys, Randy Gauvin (far left), Dan Quinn (next), the Wolf in his blue and yellow Malcolm Smith jacket and Pete Smith, #60A. Pete was the catalyst to the team and we raced every enduro we could get to in the western United States.
