THE WEEKLY FEED: JUNE 7, 2017

HISTORY LESSON

This is emergence of a super star. Bob Hannah morphed from a southern California racer into an elite athlete in 1976 when Yamaha signed him and Danny Turner. Hannah took the water-cooled OW and blew the socks off the Honda Marty Smith squad. Bob was mouthy, he was truly fit and he used a lot of the track with a wild style where some fan called him “Fanner Hannah” because Bob would fan the clutch on his Yamaha keeping the revs up in the stratosphere.

New for 2017, Pro Circuit’s redesigned Showa Dual Spring Works Fork and Works Shock are now available to pro and amateur racers alike. The large 49mm fork tubes and precision machined internal parts have state-of-the-art coatings applied for durability and a smooth, consistent stroke. Axle lugs are CNC-machined from billet aluminum and provide superior strength, control and precise steering.

The Showa Works Shock compliments the Dual Spring Works Fork perfectly. An oversized 18mm shock shaft is Kashima coated for less friction and the large 50mm shock body helps reduce heat build-up for a stable and controlled ride.

The price tag is $8675.00.

*Turquoise coated fork tubes and shock shaft are optional.

ASTERISK ROAD TRIP

Mike Beier walking us through the Asterisk assembly line in Corona, California.

An asterisk is a typographical symbol or glyph, but in the moto world it is renowned as factory level knee brace technology that the average rider can buy off the shelf. We had a chance to spend the afternoon with Mike Beier, one of the owners of Asterisk and a hard-core racer back in the 80s finishing third in the 125 Nationals behind Jeff Ward and Johnny O’Mara in 1984. He raced in Europe through 1992 in their Hardcross series (Supercross on a wood track!) and went to work for Innovation Sports (CTi knee braces) in ’92. He and his partners have reorganized Asterisk and are full throttle. The company has just moved to a new facility in Corona and makes their braces 100% right here in good old So Cal. Here’s a few pics I shot when my brother and I went for a went for a walk through.

100% of the Asterisk braces are manufactured and built in the USA. They have presses, ovens, paint coves and a sewing department where all of the straps are put together.
The patella cup is a patented part and has over 100 pieces that allow it to articulate as the knee flexes.
Mike (Beier) talking with Mike (Webb) about the Asterisk technology.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

The year, 1975. The track, Valley Cycle Park. The bike, 1974 Maico AW400. Moved up shocks via Mike’s Racing Center. Shocks, Maroney built Konis. The pipe, Wheelsmith. The rider, TWebb, Hallman leathers, Cole Brothers jersey, Jofama gloves, Carerra 98 gauges. The arm pump-legendary!
