BLAST FROM THE PAST: DANNY “MAGOO” CHANDLER

Danny “Magoo” Chandler had a semi-factory ride with Maico in 1979, but when that went away he was left as a privateer. With help from future world champ Bobby Moore’s dad, Magoo raced a private 1980 Honda CR125R in a CMC series with enough verve to earn a Suzuki 125cc support ride in 1981. Late in the year Honda made an arrangement with privateer team LOP to race pre-production Honda CR480Rs in the 500cc support class of the Trans-USA fall series. Chandler and “Flying” Mike Brown battled through the series. The deal was that the rider who won the series would earn a factory ride for 1982. This classic Magoo photo is from the Rio Bravo, Texas round near Houston, Texas. Honda had a massive team in 1982 with some riders on works bikes and others on production bikes. Chandler earned his way onto works bikes in time to dominate the MX and Trophee des Nations races in 1982, even though he lost the 500cc national title to teammate Daryl Shultz.
