American Performance Technologies’ SmartCarb takes a first and second place
at the 90th Annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
Kansas City, Mo. (Sept. 19, 2012) — American Performance Technologies (APT), a privately owned, industry leading energy conservation enterprise and manufacturer of high-performance and environmentally responsible recreation and utility products, announces today that its flagship innovation, SmartCarb, powered two racers to top finishes at the 90th Annual 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colo. last month.
“We took SmartCarb back to Pikes Peak and expanded our revolutionary foothold in racing by grabbing a first, a second and multiple top-10 finishes,” said Wayne Patterson, president and CEO of APT. “After years of research, testing and racing, SmartCarb has proved itself as the future of fuel-delivery systems.”
SmartCarb enhances performance, increases fuel efficiency and cuts emissions to less than half that of a standard carburetor or injection system and is found exclusively on Motovox® products. The proven design of SmartCarb provides extremely fine atomization of fuel, precise air/fuel mixture control and altitude compensation.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is one of motorcycle and auto racing’s toughest events, challenging riders and engines with its 12.42-mile course, 156 turns and 100-miles-per-hour speeds — all at an altitude of 14,110 feet — which can rob engines of sorely needed oxygen.
Despite the altitude, racer Steve Tutt remained undefeated by setting a new course record of 11:40.521 in his fourth career win in the Quad Modified class at Pikes Peak. Additionally, Zach Warnock took second place in the highly competitive 250 Motorcycle Class in his second race on the mountain.
Both riders attributed much of their Pikes Peak success to the SmartCarb, built by APT engineers in Kansas City, Mo. “The SmartCarb was the real difference in my race this year,” said Tutt. “The winning margins are as narrow as the course and there’s absolutely no room for error. Powered by SmartCarb, My Honda® Quad ran strong and didn’t miss a beat all the way to the finish line.”
Warnock experienced the same results with his KTM 250 motorcycle, powered by SmartCarb. “The rest of the riders in my class had carburation issues all week with their bikes, especially on the upper third of the mountain,” said Warnock. “You could hear them cutting out once they hit the higher altitude. I was stoked at how even and solid my KTM ran with SmartCarb. It made all the difference in the altitude and allowed me to focus on riding.”
APT introduced SmartCarb last year at the 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and experienced immediate success taking home a first and second place in the Quad Division.
“Our focus was on expanding the number of riders using SmartCarb technology at Pikes Peak,” said Patterson. “Last year we just wanted to prove it would work. And it did. But this year, we expanded into multiple motorcycle classes and worked hard to convince some marquee riders to try our SmartCarb and every one of them — without exception — absolutely loved it.”
This year, for the first time in its history, the Pikes Peak route was completely asphalt and the weather conditions on the mountain ranged from sunny and mild one minute, to rain, wind and sleet the next. But the racers at Pikes Peak threw everything they had at the mountain.
“The successful results at Pikes Peak testify to the dedication of the SmartCarb development team,” said Corey Dyess, vice president of research and development at APT. “We always knew SmartCarb was capable of providing the exceptional performance gains necessary to attack the mountain. But more importantly, SmartCarb maintains the correct air/fuel ratios to hold those gains as long as possible during breakneck climbs to the top. The best part was seeing the riders’ eyes light up when they felt the difference of SmartCarb in their engines. That was the real reward.”
APT is currently exploring mainstream production applications for the SmartCarb technology — including motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs — and will be standard equipment on Motovox mini bikes, go-karts and UTVs in 2013. Additionally, the low-emission SmartCarb has enabled the Motovox line-up to pass EPA-certification without the use of a catalytic converter.
