THE WEEKLY FEED: TESTING SLAVENS FULLY MODDED KTM 300XC TBI AND 300 XCW TPI

BLAST FROM THE PAST

We call this move “The Full LaPorte”. Throttle matted, staying low and hanging off the back of the machine while airborne. This is classic Danny LaPorte, an American motocross hero and…one of the most versatile racers on the planet winning the Baja 1000 for three consecutive years, was a Factory member of the Cagiva Paris-Dakkar team, won a world class Rally and was top American at the 1989 ISDE in Germany

TESTING…TESTING…SLAVENS RACING KTM 300 TBI vs 300 TPI

This last weekend we went out testing with Jeff Slavens and his personal KTM 300s, a fully modified  XC300 TBI and an XC-W TPI. The goal was a head to head test between the TBI XC and the TPI XC-W.

Both machines were fit with a Slavens Mule MX-Tech Raven 49mm Complete Fork w/ Luxon Triple Clamp, Slavens Mule National shock by MX Tech, Rekluse Core ‘Auto’ clutch, larger Acerbis tanks, XC Gear MAKO 360SX Handlebar Mount, Gummy tires, Nitro Mousse inserts, SXS guards and a glug of other mods.

Ryan Koch on the Slavens XC300. He liked the power of the throttle body injection, loved the fork and being a trials guy, rode the fence on the Rekluse ‘Auto’ clutch. He uses the clutch to make traction and the Rekluse really leans towards not having to use the clutch, but the with throttle to make traction. All of the old guys loved the Core Auto!

Brian Palmer and Ryan play in the hills. Palmer definitely liked the XC version better, but then again he owns one!

BP on his 300XC. We used his bike and Ryans TPI machine for direct comparisons to the fully modded Slavens wagons.

Jeff Slavens on the XC. He’s big on testing what they sell and is an excellent off-roader. What was his preference? He likes the TPI machine a skosh better, mainly because he has more setup time on it and it has a handlebar mounted rear brake that works superbly with the Auto clutch when the terrain gets tight and technical. Look for a full story in an upcoming issue of Dirt Bike!

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

With the Virginia City Grand Prix looming, I found these pics from the one time I raced there. I believe it was 1995, a total mudder and an incredibly tough event. I was totally in lust over the ’95 Honda CR250, I had fit it with a Marzocchi fork, IMS big tank, FMF exhaust and a few off-road do-dads to make life better. I was very fortunate that my friend Hylton Beattie (FMF’s do-it-all master) pitted for me, and kept the Wolfster going. I recall doing quite well in the 40-class and think that Danny Hamel won the event.

Inside the FMF pits, rain slammed the area so we huddled under Hylton’s tent.

New goggs and a splash of petrol kept the Wolfster on the trail. It was a super tough event.
