THE WEEKLY FEED: 2019 GasGas EC300 first ride, Dick Burleson captured

Dick Burleson proved his grit by winning 8-straight national Enduro titles. He was a bit unorthodox as he wore glasses (which were mandatory!) and he hated to lose. Very fit, DB had a passion for riding and his playtime was his training. During one of his titles which he’d already won, he raced a Husky 125 in the final National. It was known as being pitifully slow, Dick went out and won convincingly.

GASGAS EC300

Here’s a look at our first outing with the 2019 GasGas EC300. The machine has evolved in the last couple of years when they added cutting edge suspension via KYB components, improved power, new electronics that make for quicker ‘button’ starting and adjustable maps that rotate between a ‘Sun’ map for maximum power and a ‘Rain’ map when traction becomes questionable. The machine targets the tough mid-bore two-stroke class where KTM has dominated the class and has set a lofty target with decades of focused evolution. The GasGas EC300 comes out of the hole as a viable machine- it’s not just a casual trail bike, it has heart and a strong handling package stone stock.

With Kyle Redmond at the controls we put the new GasGas EC300 through some of ‘his’ fun stuff. Kyle praised the KYB suspension and overall handling traits of the machine.

 

The ergos are slim, the controls nice and the clutch feel and engagement are nice. Our bike came jetted a little fat so we leaned out the pilot and main, plus went one clip leaner on the needle.

 

Smooth power down low is tractable, and it makes a strong pull on top. It vibrates a bit and we’re looking into some adjustments that will help give it a bit more meat down low. The EC300 comes with excellent components in the Magura clutch, Neken bars, FMF muffler and Nissan brakes.

 

The KYB suspension lets you attack obstacles with confidence. Kyle liked it in the rock zones, and we never played with settings, other than bleeding the fork.

2018 LOS ANCIANOS TECATE ENDURO ENTRIES, CLASSES AND A FINISH LINE FIESTA!

 

Here are the latest developments on this year’s Enduro:

  • Due to the overwhelming generosity of our major sponsors; Vey’s Powersports/Bike Bandit.com, DP Racing, and Rene Cortez, this year’s race will offer a true PRO class.  $2500 for 1st place, $1000 for 2nd, $500 for 3rd.
  • As a result of their support, we also plan to have an expanded Finish Line Fiesta to honor our entrants.
  • Race will be held on December 1st, 2018 at Hacienda Santa Veronica. First line off at 7:01AM.
  • Course is 3 Tests of 25–35 miles. 85-90 total.
  • Tests will increase in difficulty. Test 3 will challenge.
  • Masters and Women only race first 2 tests.
  • Entries will open at 6:00PM, PDT on October 10th 2018.
  • Yes entries open on the 10th, NOT the 1st!
  • Entry fee is $150, includes t-shirt and lunch.

DUVALL DNF HURTS HIS NATIONAL ENDURO CHANCES

The Loose Moose National Enduro took place this past weekend in Marquette, Michigan. Weather was in the lower 70’s with conditions that were great for racing. The six-test race course was rough and sandy but flowed through a pine tree lined track. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thad Duvall had a strong start to his day finishing the first test in second place aboard his FX 350. For the remainder of the day, he would battle within the top five positions. On the final test of the day, Duvall hit a rock, which ended up damaging the engine and was unable to finish the test, leading him to a last place position in the Pro 1 class. “I had high expectations going into this round. It was a new place for me, but my mistake in the final test cost me the day. I will move forward and look to the next round.” said Thad Duvall.

 

The Kurt Caselli Foundation to host CPR/First Aid certification training on Sunday in conjunction with Costa Mesa EnduroCross

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

With the announcement of the 2018 Tecate Enduro in December, here’s a look at Team Kolbe Can-Am, circa 1979. Randy Gauvin (far left), Dan Quinn, TWebb and the infamous Pete Smith on the far right. This event was a two-day 500-miler and was a brute. Winning the Team competition was a big deal back then and was dominated by Casey Folks and Scot Harden. I was actually in the hunt after day one, but broke a chain (those things happened back in the day!) and sadly DNF’d.
