DETROIT SUPERCROSS POST-RACE REPORT
The Detroit Supercross once again proved that nothing is for certain in the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross season. Cooper Webb retained the points lead, but showed just a hint of weakness. Eli Tomac proved that when he’s on, he’s still impossible to beat. And Chad Reed proved that he can still run with the best riders in the world. Here’s what they had to say after the race.
Eli Tomac: “Tonight was a big swing. If I would have had another race like last week, I would say it was pretty close to being over with for the championship. We were feeling it through all those practices. I went into that third main there with a big cushion. Sometimes you get a little too comfy. I blew the start there and there was another spot where I went flying off and almost hit the haybail. I got it back together, but of course Coop is charging to the front too. I’m watching that on the pit board. I’m like ‘gosh, we gotta go. But so much of a better weekend for us.”
Cooper Webb: “Today didn’t start off the best, I was struggling with the track earlier in the day and qualified ninth. I went to the Main Event with not-the-best gate pick for the Triple Crown but I got a good start in the first one. I just made a lot of mistakes and didn’t ride that well but we, as a team, regrouped and figured out some things to get better. Looking back, I wish I would have done a little better in the first one and I could have potentially gotten the overall but that’s racing and it’s good to be on the podium with a second place, and to get another Main Event win is nice.”
Chad Reed: ” It was a fun day. Right from the beginning, I felt OK. For me, it’s not always about where you’re at. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to be up there in the top 10 in practice, but I don’t ever get too stressed on being 14th. It definitely gets old, though. I felt racy. I felt like with a good start I could go. It was fun. The track was fast paced, The whoops were tough. I’m most proud of the 132 podiums. Top 5s aren’t that great. I’m super proud to be up here with these guys They’re the best in the world. I wanted to be here and do it this late in my career.
Dean Wilson: “Today was about mixed emotions.I say that because I qualified second and my riding was really good in both sessions of practice but I struggled in the races tonight. I feel like with my riding I’m a lot more capable than that, so for the third race, I was pretty fired up and came off the start really good. I stayed in fourth the whole race right there and unfortunately, I made a mistake to allow Marvin [Musquin] by me and I went to square him up right before the whoops but I didn’t realize Kenny [Roczen] was right there and I kind of got cleaned out, but that’s racing. Eleventh overall is definitely not where I want to be, I’m very well capable of being on that box but I just need to make it happen.”
