THE WEEKLY FEED: THE FASTEST MAN TO EVER RACE IN THE DESERT

A HISTORY LESSON: J.N. ROBERTS

J.N. Roberts dominated the California desert in the late 60’s and early 70’s with all the subtleness of a man smashing ants with a tank. And while his role in On Any Sunday marched him into the limelight of the fledging dirt bike world, it was his brilliant ability to dance across the desert at speeds that were inconceivable that made him famous. J.N. won the infamous Barstow to Vegas four consecutive times, at one point he won 27 straight races, was a two-time Baja 1000 winner, two-time Baja 500 winner, the Mint 400 three-times and raced the 1971 ISDT. J.N. went on to become a Hollywood stuntman, he has participated in the Day in the Dirt many times, an event which his son Jimmy is one of the promoters.

NEWS

This is really interesting…Suzuki basically pulls the plug on their Factory racing program both here and in Europe, yet they scratch together enough cash to pay Ricky Carmichael to be a Brand Ambassador based on past accolades.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

The year,1983. The place, Indian Dunes. The goal, jump into the Santa Clarita river for Paul Clipper’s Nikon. My thoughts on this bike, a new Husky 500XC were mixed. I really wanted to love it, as the two previous years I raced a 430XC in a myriad of off-road events. But this bike was a belcher, it blew out huge throbby power, vibrated like a big dog and it gained a pretty hefty chunk of girth in one year. At about the mid-point of the year I slipped a heavy modified Husky 420 Auto motor (one of the best powerplants that I raced and built by Rick Jones, formerly Gaylon Mosiers mechanic and a great friend) into the chassis and had a very good year racing enduros.
