Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
I have a 2011 KTM 85 that had major plug fowling problems that we fixed by putting the throttle-slider needle clip to the second notch to the top.
When it was fowling a plug, it used to start second kick every time cold; now, it takes 15 odd kicks to get it to fire up. When it does start, it revs to full throttle without me touching the throttle until it’s warm. The weird thing is, if you started it in the morning and let it cool down completely, it would start second kick like a normal two-stroke.
You seem to fix everyone’s problems, so we thought we would try you. Thank you so much for your time.
Flynn
I personally sent a missive to my buddy Dick Wilk for his advice here, as it could be a myriad of issues plaguing your steed. If the throttle is not sticking open, then you have an air leak. In Dick’s words: “This can come from the base gasket, intake manifold, center case gasket or crank seals. You can have the engine pressure checked to determine where it’s leaking, or send the engine to Dick’s Racing for evaluation. A medium-sized ice chest works great for shipping engines.”
Every lanky pilot who owns one of these stunning machines is going through your same dilemma, as the new KTM 300 has been re-engineered from fore to aft. The new bar mounts are not rubber mounted and have two bar positions instead of four. They come in position 1. Flip them around to 2 to open it up. As of now, several companies are working on a more adjustable bar mount. We called Jeff Slavens, and he told us that last year’s clamp fits perfectly and gives you six available bar positions. Jeff said that Flo Motorsports has 4mm-lowered pegs, and Seat Concepts has a Comfort tall saddle that is 19mm taller than the stocker.
If you don’t mind displaying your ignorance for the world to see, who are we to deny the opportunity? Send evidence of your failures to [email protected] orMr. Know-It-All
