BLAST FROM THE PAST: Jeff Leisk

Jeff Leisk was the first Australian rider to win a world motocross Grand Prix finished as runner-up in the 1989 world 500 motocross championship. He retired from motocross at the end of 1990 and raced sprint cars before becoming the general manager of KTM Australia. Jeff started racing aged 7, won an Australian junior championship at nine and at 17 years old  he won the 500cc Australian championship. Jeff raced in the U.S in the late 80’s and then moved onto the motocross GP class. In his first race he led, before running out of fuel. In the second moto, equipped with a larger tank and won the moto. He went on to finish second in the championship behind David Thorpe. Here’s a great quote from Mike Webb about Jeff Leisk:  “Back  in the ‘80’s Jeff raced for factory Yamaha America, he lived with Jimmy Holley, one day we all rode mountain bikes from Holley’s house in Woodland Hills to the beach. We ended up at Gladstone’s and I told Jim that I was so impressed by this kid from Oz that came to America to race that I would buy him lunch, Holley cracked up and said Jeff’s Dad was a drywall contractor in Oz and was a multi millionaire….. Needless to say, I let Leisk buy lunch!”

The RMX days
Racing the Idaho City Qualifier was always high on my list of must-dos. The four-day event had good trail, tough sections and long days. I competed on a Suzuki RM 250 & RMX250 and in 1991 I rode with brother Mike and my big buddy Mental.

These two boys had a big impact on RMX development- Randy Hawkins and Charles Halcomb. Two great friends of mine, we started racing modified RM250’s in 1988 at the Qualifiers.

 

I’m pretty sure this is Trask in 1988. I wasn’t in a great place physically, too fat, no training and a little awkward in snotty conditions. Both Randy and Charles were true buddies and gave me crap constantly!

 

This is Mike’s RMX250 and he’s launching during one of our test/practice days out in the high desert. Mike played a pivotal role in my ISDE’s as he would ride tough trail with me in an effort to get me fit enough to make it six days.

 

ISDE, Cessnock, Australia- 1992. I raced a Suzuki RMX250 and finished on Sliver. One of the things I remember is riding the last two days with my arms totally numb. The long and very tough days (160-miles) beat me up but at the time I was fit and mentally tough- so quitting was not in the equation.
I raced the 1995 GNCC series on a modified Suzuki RMX250. It was on my bucket list and with my brothers help, we built the bike, kept it at Guy Cooper’s house and his brother in law Billy actually drove the machines (Coop’s and Mine) and prepped my bike for every race. I had a great battle in the Senior class with Terry Mealer and ended up taking home the number one plate. One of my fondest memories was getting to the events early and spending time with Dave Coombs. He was a true believer in off-road and loved the GNCC series.
