Ryan Villopoto remained in contention coming into San Francisco, but was definitely in need of a win to close the gap between him and points leader Ryan Dungey. Villopoto did exactly that on Saturday night. When Dungey jumped out to an early lead in the Supercross class main event, it appeared like the deficit in the overall standings might get larger. However, a determined Villopoto pushed hard, passing Josh Hill for second and setting his sights on the leader. Just a few laps later, a crash from Dungey opened the door for Villopoto. He capitalized on the opportunity and although Dungey remounted in the lead, Villopoto quickly worked his way past and never looked back. Villopoto dominated the second half of the race and cruised to a hard-earned victory that closed the gap in the overall standings from 20 points to 13 points.
