THE WEEKLY FEED: RICKY JOHNSON UNPLUGGED

BLAST FROM THE PAST: Ricky Johnson The Dominator!

Our sister publication published this shot of RJ as he dominated at Unadilla, circa 1988. We ran into RJ last week and his quote about the photo- “Look under Kicking Ass in the dictionary and you will find that picture…45-second lead!”
In 1986 Ricky was in huge battle with his teammate David Bailey in the Supercross series. His take on the times -” This is 1986, we were switching between the conventional Works Showa fork and their first attempt at upside down forks. I ended up going upside down because I can hit sh-t harder!”.

FIELD TESTING

Taylor Robert came out to the USWE media day and shows off the new KC66 Special from USWE.

USWE hydration systems invited us out to the high desert to test their products where they’re designed to work- riding off-road. In spite of the cold weather staying hydrated is crucial and USWE’s plethora of systems all revolve around their patented harnessing system which keeps the fluids from bouncing around, no matter the size of the system you are using. They’re easy to fill, flow nicely, have many bladder sizes ranging from racer packs to long haul dual sport units.

The USWE hierarchy talk about the hydration systems and the patented harness system. Donnie Emler (Jr) talks about the KC66 Foundation and USWE’s involvement.
Taylor Robert drops in to a technical hillclimb on a day when the traction was flat incredible. Taylor was a magician all day and everyone left the ride shaking their heads with his ability to conquer off-road obstacles.

The day ended with a great lunch, some adult beverages and some more technical talk about the product. Thanks USWE!

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

I’m thinking this was 1985 or 86. It was a track that we built in the hills and was tagged Unadilla West. We would tote fuel with us to this remote local, moto all day and then point it back to the fort. I’m testing an ATK 560, a machine that was a joy to ride and well ahead of its time. It was unique with its no linkage, Horst Leitner designed the chassis, fit it with a Rotax 4-stroke engine and this particular machine was one that he ‘breathed’ on. It was bloody fast! WP suspension, a countershaft disc brake and his Anti Torque chain drive all made this machine both cutting edge and very special- especially considering the times. My good buddy Fran “The Leaper” Kuhn snapped the pic.
