THE WEEKLY FEED: REX STATEN SO CAL MX HERO, WEIRD LINES AND NEWS

FROZEN

Back in 1973 Rex Staten was beginning his rise as one of the elite racers in the Southern California motocross explosion. Racing his Holladay Cycles Maico, Rex blistered both the night race circuit (Ascot, Irwindale and Lyons Raceway) and at Dead Mans Point  where they actually put a bounty out on him. $50 bucks to anybody who could beat him! Of note, The Motocross Newspaper was very popular in So Cal and tried to snare some of the popularity of Cycle News, which was the dominant news source of the motorcycling community.

DANTE TAKES IDAHO HARE SCRAMBLES

Dante Olivira took the overall win at the Idaho round of the Western Hare Scrambles series when he passed David Kamo late in the race. A major snowstorm hit the area and while it provided killer traction, there were some gorp sections that trapped many riders.

David Kamo raced an older KTM and led the entire race until the clutch gave out with two laps to go. He limped it in, got stuck right near the end and couldn’t get the machine started. Dante passed him. David took second place.

GET IN LINE!

Josh Strang leads Kailub Russell during the opening laps of the Wild Boar GNCC. In the lead pic you can see Kailub shadowing the Factory Husqvarna rider. That’s Kailub’s pit board sneaking out giving him the line selection that they worked out when walking the track.
Kailub saws off the trail early, shoots through a gap in the trees and makes the pass on Strang as they exit onto a short road section. It’s wild, most folks can’t remember where they put their car keys, and Russell chooses a creative line when he’s at speed on a section of a 13-mile loop!

VIDEO

The Motocross des Nations, 1986 featured the steam roller team of Johnny O’Mara, Rick Johnson and David Bailey who never lost a moto during the team competition.   O’Show famously smokes the 500cc world champ David Thorp in his CR125R on the hilly Maggiora circuit. All the Americans go 1-2 in every moto and lay waste to the best motocross riders in the world.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Virginia City GP, 1993. It dumped hard prior to the event and I had never been there, though I’d heard horror stories about how tough it was. My good friend Hylton Beatty, who ran FMF’s support program took my bike to the race, pitted for me and coaxed me into sucking it up and finishing what was a very demanding race. I’m pretty sure that Danny Hamel won and I ended up taking home first place in class.
