BLAST FROM THE PAST
Fantastic on many levels, Pierre Karsmakers on a twin stinger Che Zed at the Citadel in Namur, Belgium. Born in Waalre, Holland, in 1946 Pierre started his racing career at age 18. He excelled early on racing motocross within his home country, winning national titles in Holland in 1967, 1969 and 1971. He was CZ mounted until switching to Husqvarna and opting to take his talents to the U.S. in 1972. Karsmakers also brought to America heightened concepts of proper training and nutrition for riders and proper setup for their machines. Yamaha signed him in 1973 where Karsmakers won the 500cc motocross National Championship series. He also won the AMA Florida Winter Series that year, winning four of six events. He won seven of 11 AMA National motos and claimed 17 victories in 36 races overall. He will always be known as one of the fittest racers, a fanatic for bike setup and instrumental in the worldwide growth of motocross .

How about a little Kyle Redmond performing some magic on a Dirt Bike test YZ250 about a decade ago. This is Kyle’s backyard, it’s about a 8-foot drop from the dam to a rocky stream. Kurt Caselli was with us during the shoot and said that Kyle did stuff on a machine that wasn’t in his playbook. ’nuff said!

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY
1990, Sweden, ISDE. My DR350, a machine we setup with an RM fork and shock, a Honda CR250 airbox and basically a stock motor; gets a dousing of contact cleaner on the rear rotor mid way through the six day ordeal. Big time mud and exhausting trail hammered the machine (and the pilot) and she was puking some crude on the back of the bike. A hidden rock in the final special test on day 5 bent the rear sprocket, derailed the chain and ended my first Six Days event within spitting distance of the finish.
