Brad Lackey, circa 1976 on his Fox Air Shocked equipped Factory Husqvarna. Brad loved racing against the Europeans, who dominated the sport. His transition to racing full time in Europe ended with him becoming America’s first World Champion in 1982. Thanks to Mark Kiel was letting us invade his photo vault.

Wow, how the off-road world of ISDE racing has changed. Winning the overall Trophy team win in Spain was the culmination of efforts via Malcolm Smith, John Penton and Dick Burleson in the 70’s, Larry Roeseler in the 80’s and 90s and Rich Caselli and his son Kurt in the 2000s. We’ve been tapping at the door for years and led by Taylor Robert who won the overall and shadowed by teammates Kailub Russell (KTM), Thad Duvall – Husqvarna and eleventh hour replacement rider Layne Michael. Michael’s accomplishment was incredible, easpecially since he was not originally on the team. Last years ISDE overall winner Ryan Sipes was injured in a pre-race accident, ending his quest to defend his 2015 overall win.   Coastal Racing/Rockstar/Husqvarna teammate Layne Michael had less  than 24-hour’s noticewhen he boarded a plane to Spain. As the week went on Michael’s results kept improving making him crucial to the winning U.S. effort.
Team USA dominated an event that has been owned by the European teams from Sweden, Italy, France, Finland, Germany (both east and west) and Czechoslovakia … for decades.  Congrats boys!

Malcolm Smith, Dick Burleson, Larry Roeseler, the U.S Trophy Team from 1982 and Kurt Caselli have all played a major role in Team USA’s overall win.

Bromley Motorsports and Beta racer Kyle McDonal won the AMA East Hare Scramble Championship aboard his Beta RR 2 stroke. McDonal’s championship makes it a 1-1 Beta sweep in the series as Beta racer Nick Burson won the West championship two weeks earlier.

Aerostich   AD-1 Pants

The new Aerostich AD-1’s are waterproof all-weather advanced-technology protective pants suitable for all types of riding. They provide the classic jeans-cut fit, meaning the waist will fall at about the same location as the belt-line of your jeans (vs. Aerostich’s similar-looking Darien Pants which fit like khaki pants). Full-length separating side zippers help the pants go on and off fast and feature inner and outer weather flaps to keep rain and wind out. Dual waistband side-snaps provide a custom-adjustable fit for all-season comfort and the front zippered fly features a seam sealed inner gusset for enhanced water resistance. These pants also include a removable Aerostich Money Belt (#1854) and a gusseted crotch which allows greater all-day comfort for moving around in the saddle. AD-1’s are available in two versions, regular and ‘light’, to better meet your exact requirements. The regular HT600D Nylon version uses a super strong and highly abrasion resistant three layer GORE-TEX® fabric (#165) which is extra long wearing. A lighter and slightly cooler option are the AD-1 Lights (#308) which use a HT200D Nylon GORE-TEX®. These are about two thirds as abrasion resistant as the regular AD-1’s and well suited for commuting and urban riding applications.

Power To Spare The 300 2-stroke is the perfect crossover tool. New valve timing provides even more smoothness as the horsepower builds. This big power is delivered with perfect progression, guaranteeing maximum adhesion, synonymous with efficiency at the foot of the steepest slopes. The weight of the bike is very light considering the fact that it is equipped with a modern electric starting system; it is no heavier than a kick start system. Deemed excellent by the franchise users, Sherco has further improved the bike this year so that it is even more suited to performing well in the extreme enduro events. The new clutch is even more durable and the gearbox has been strengthened.

The setting as I remember it; Southern Ohio- National Enduro. I had drawn #1 (first rider out) and Kevin Hines went to the club and told them that this Southern California dude would kill himself if he had to lead. The club put me back near Mike Melton, a good friend. In the end Kevin was right, the event was full grease through tight woods and I was a cat dropped in an alligator pit. Of note, my bike was the first machine equipped with dual disc brakes (KTM 250 1983 or 84) and I was running so late that the only people who stayed and waited at the gas for me was Mike Melton’s folks. They fed me, gassed me and got me back on the trail.
