THE WEEKLY FEED: MARTY MOATES LEADS THE WAY

A HISTORY LESSON

The late Marty Moates tests his Husky’s rear suspension at 1977 Superbowl of Motocross. While Marty was known for his USGP win on the LOP Yamaha, his earlier years were spent beating the tracks on mostly shop sponsored rides. Marty is greatly missed, his passion for the sport and what he brought to the history books with his USGP win in 1980 is etched in stone. A big thanks to Mark Kiel, his photos from the day keep us smiling.

PASSAGES

 R.I.P GUENNADY MOISEEV (1948—2017)

News from the Russian Motorcycle Federation reports that  three-time 250 World Champion Guennady Moiseev passed away. He was 69 years old.  Moiseev won the 1974 250 World Championship following a nasty GP championship that pitted him against Czech rider Jarolsav Falta. Moiseev would go on to to win the 1977 and 1978 250 World Championships after the 1974 crown—and he led the Russian team to the 1978 Motocross des Nations victory in Sweden (with teammates Viktor Kavinov, Yuri Khudiakov and Valeriy Korneev).

Casey Folks Cup To Be Awarded To Winning EnduroCross Vet Class Racer At Las Vegas Opener

The 2017 AMA EnduroCross Series is pleased to announce the addition of the Casey Folks Cup at round one of the seven round indoor off-road racing series. Honoring the legendary racer, dealer, race promoter and motorcycling ambassador, the Casey Folks Cup will be awarded to the winner of the EnduroCross Vet Class (35 years or older competitor) during the kick off event on August 19th inside the Orleans Arena EnduroCross.

“Casey Folks lived a life most of us only dream about,” says Folks’ son, Daryl. “He was a participant, promoter and friend to off-road racers and the industry. As a racer, he competed in almost every type of off-road event throughout the Western United States and in several countries… and the tougher the event, the better Casey liked it!”

A Nevada Off-Road Hall of Fame member, Casey was best known throughout the state and the racing community as the founder and driving force behind his successful Best In The Desert Racing Association series. During his own racing career he won 16 championships and competed in more than 30 races from Baja to the Tunisia Rally in North Africa. In 1980, he was the first to Ironman the Baja 1000 and finish. Casey is also remembered as the only racer to finish every Barstow-to-Vegas race.

“As a racer, Casey was as tough as they come,” said Folks. “As a promoter, he created memorable moments for thousands of racers and teams with spectacular events like a trio of 7-day 2000-mile Nevada Rallies in the 1990s, the 7-day 2000-mile Nevada 2000 race and two Nevada 1000 3-day races. On top of it all, he’s probably best known for the continuous running of America’s longest off-road race, the Vegas to Reno.

“As life goes on, and we continue to experience the passion of off-road racing, Casey’s legacy will live on,” concludes Daryl Folks. “On behalf of the Folks family, we will be honored to present the inaugural Casey Folks Cup on August 19th in Las Vegas.”

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Since the early 90s I’ve been a died in the wool KTM fan. The 300 is perhaps my favorite machine ever and this shot is from ’96 I believe. I had raced a 300 at the ISDE, Tecate, the Qualifier series and a glug of enduros. Love this wagon!
