THE WEEKLY FEED: MARCH 9, 2016

BLAST FROM  THE PAST

Since this is my GNCC special, here’s a look at some of the players from 2003, 2008 and 2013.

andrewair03
Fred Andrews, 2003 a Factory Kawasaki Off-road racer (now defunct), finished fourth in the series, which was won by Barry Hawk. Freddy won the 1993 GNCC championship on a Yamaha.

PaulWhibley'08
In 2008 Paul Whibley was a Factory Suzuki Off-road (now defunct) racer and finished second behind David Knight.

kailub13
In 2013 Kailub Russell made the transition to the XC1 class and flat dominated with a 7 win season.

GNCC PICS AND PANS: FUN STUFF FROM A HUGE OPENING ROUND!!

DSC_6378
Billy Morris, former band member of the rock group Warrant not only raced his KTM Jackpiner in the morning event, he kicked off the pro race with a guitar solo of the National Anthem!

DSC_6317
Kailub’s 350XCF uses an FMF system, and like the majority of the Pro’s, he runs it wide open (no SA or quiet insert).

DSC_6311
Russell’s 350 has a coolant recovery system that actually holds radiator fluid in the main downtube on the frame.

DSC_6312
A Rekluse clutch, with a standard engagement is used. P3 carbon and radiator hose sheaths ward off abuse.

DSC_6306
IMS’s new footpegs look wicked!

DSC_6308
Kailub was one of the few factory racers to use the extreme features of the Dunlop sand tire.

DSC_6276
Josh Strang’s Husky is a standard 450, 5-speeder, mapped for a smoother flow of throttle since Josh has found that short shifting and staying the meat of the power is easier on him than revving the beast. A WP Cone Valve fork and Traxx shock handle the suspension.

DSC_6295
Strang’s Husky has a coolant recovery system nestled in the airbox.

DSC_6161
If you look closely at the left front tire of this ATV racer you’ll see…
ATVtrump
That he’s a Trump supporter.

DSC_5847
Jason Thomas won the XC2 championship last year and was left without a ride. He put together a deal with Lojak’s Yamaha, Maxxis and Moose Racing for his assault on the XC1 class racing a YZ250FX.

DSC_5865
Chris Bach is one of the few Pro’s who races a non-electric start machine in the XC1 class. As you can see the JCR Honda runs Pro Circuit’s twin exhaust.

DSC_5870
Grant Baylor and his N-Fab/Am Pro teammate Daniel Milner are YZ450FX mounted and loving it. According to their boss Randy Hawkins, they run the motors virtually stock, just with a slip on FMF exhaust.

DSC_5909
Charlie Mullins practiced on saturday, but a tender foot kept him from racing. He will miss the first two GNCCs.

DSC_5908
Kailub Russell talks shop about his Traxx factory rear damper. We were told that Kailub likes his rear end to feel ‘dead’ in the sand, which gives him more control.

DSC_5946
Timmy Coombs kept on eye on the start area in the huge field at the Rodman facility in Palatka.

DSC_6207
Ryan Sipes looks over his Coast Racing Husqvarna. Barry Hawk is his team manager and the machines want for nothing over the factory Husky’s.

DSC_6264
Cory Buttrick, formerly a Beta rider has switched to KTM 450XCF machine, with help from SRT, Kenda and Pro Circuit. He told us that he loves this wagon!

DSC_6269
Cory uses the new WP air fork valved for him by JDP. He said its worlds better than the 4CS fork.

DSC_5924
Nick Fahringer is going under the knife to get some hardware removed from his knee. His goal is to be ready for the next National Enduro.

DSC_5919
Thad Duvall’s Rocky Mountain, FAR sponsored machine uses the Neken SFS triple clamp. It has damping controlled by air pressure and according to Thad, it’s so good that he hates riding without it.

DSC_5931
Humm, not overly excited about this UTV company name.

DSC_6329
Kacy Martinez flat hauls the mail! She dominated the morning class.

DSC_6373
The man, the mogul, the master behind the scenes at FMF Racing is none other than…Lil’D- Donnie Emler Junior.

DSC_6363
Quinn Cody’s main job is no longer racing, but its running the Casselli Foundation. This was his first GNCC and came away impressed.

DSC_5845
Ricky Russell’s new ride in the XC1 class an MCS/Obermeyer Suzuki RM-Z450. RR looked strong the first two laps.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 6.36.50 AM
Saw this on Instagram. It’s 1994 and the Nevada Rally. This is day 1, I flatted twice (fixed on the trail) and then ran out of tubes. The tire bead blew off when I was headed in running at 45 or 50MPH. I ate sh….t! I finally cut the carcass that had wrapped around the rear frame loop off and rode in on the rim. The next week of racing brought in four more flats, a nasty 150-mile battle with Daryl Folks and a broken foot that happened when I got tired of getting roosted by Daryl’s KTM.
