GREAT INTERVIEW WITH DAKAR WINNER SAM SUNDERLAND IN ENDURO21

HERE’S A LOOK AT ONE OF THE QUESTIONS…WHAT WAS THE KEY TO IT ALL THIS YEAR, WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE FOR YOU PERSONALLY? “The hardest thing is to control yourself. You prepare all year and when you get there and feel so good you just want to go. But it’s so easy to make a small mistake – coming up on someone slower blasting up a dust cloud and you’re desperate to get by them and risk so much to gain what over the whole event is so little. It must have looked like amateur hour as I went through some of the river crossings with my feet out paddling, but it would be so easy to catch a rock, wash the front wheel out, lay it down and drag a load of water through the air box. That’s 30 minutes gone right there. Those were the kind of things I tried to think about, you’re a racer, you just want to go as fast as you can but in this sport you have to hold something back sometimes.”

AMA National Hare & Hound Championship Murphy, ID.   Gary Sutherlin came into Idaho feeling good after winning Round 2. “I got the start and was first off the bomb which was nice. It wasn’t dusty at all so the guys just fed off me for 70 miles.” Leading the first half of the race, Sutherlin was expecting to take the checked flag. “Ricky ended up using some interesting lines to get by me and we duked it out for a while.” Unfortunately, Sutherlin had a little wreck which gave Ricky enough of a gap to take the win. “It was a frustrating day but I’m only 9 points down in the championship hunt so I’m already looking forward to the next one.”

BRABEC WINS SONORA RALLY, THEN ‘COPTERS TO IDAHO AND WINS NATIONAL H&H!

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 6.18.06 AM
Fresh off a dominant performance winning the Sonora Rally, Ricky Brabec jumped into a Helicopter piloted by Jim McCoy and headed to Murphy, Idaho for the 3rd round of the AMA NHHA Championship. Ricky battled the best and once again came away with the Win, extending his Championship points lead. “The first loop for me was tough, I wasn’t sure of the pace or how to hit things at speed after riding the rally bike. I eventually got passed by Nick Burson and that put me in third, after he passed I said to myself, ok, I gotta get rid of the arm pump and suck it up with my Montezuma stomach issue. I picked up the pace and headed out for the second loop right behind Gary. The course kept us in these washes that were too tight to make passes in. So I hopped out made a pass on Gary and he did the same right back to me. Luckily I was able to make the pass right before we headed into the faster trails which lead me to the checkers in first.” — Ricky Brabec Idaho was the debut race for Ricky on the all new 2017 Honda CRF450RX.

MUGEN ELECTRIC MOTOCROSSER?!@!

Screen Shot 2017-03-29 at 6.21.31 AM
Seen at the Tokyo Motorshow, the Mugen E-Bike tagged the E-Rex (skeleton body work) is fit with Showa components, carbon rotors and a big nasty looking powerplant. With Mugen’s racing history there is no doubt that they could make interesting for the electric bike world.

INDIAN DUNES RETRO

Back when my brother Mike and I were Indian Dunes guys, there was one rider who always made it look easy- Randy Stubbs. I never met him, but watched him magically navigate his Bultaco around Shadow Glen, the International track and some the ‘dunes infamous GPs. Thanks Mark Kiel for putting up this shot!
