BLAST FROM THE PAST: CHARLES HALCOMB- MAMMOTH!

How about my long time friend Charles Halcomb racing the Mammoth MX in 1977. Charles was racing for Factory Husqvarna, his Manager was Terry Knott (the two would work together in the years coming at Suzuki). Charles finished third behind Rex Staten and Mike Bell. Not bad company to keep! Charles told us that they would take off the stock tank (to preserve and reinstall it when they sold the bikes) and he fit a Cycle Craft fiberglass unit that Bob Grossi gave him. These tanks were made in Santa Cruz by Joel Woods. Below is a one of the originals that Charles just found, had it repainted and asked for some guy named Malcolm to sign.

Enduro Engineering have designed wheel spacers to allow you to run KTM Wheels on Beta Motorcycles. Simply by switch the KTM Wheel spacers out for these Enduro Engineering Wheel spacer, you will be able to have KTM Wheels fit on most current Beta Motorcycles. There are 2 different kits available, 1 comes with just wheel spacers, the other is wheel spacers and rear oversized rotor included. In order for the KTM Wheels to fit you will also need to switch to an oversized rear brake rotor. Back in 1986 Steve Schmitz was one of our main test riders. Steve had an innate knack for making good things happen anytime the camera was out. Steven was a riot and sadly passed away in 2017.

 

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Ah, coming off my venture with the 1974 Yamaha MX400- which left me wanting so I bought a used 450 Maico. This is Valley Cycle Park, circa 1975. My form- I look rigid, the jersey is a bit generic, the head gear on point with the Bell RT, Careera 98’s and Jofa. This bike was flat wonderful, though the frame broke weekly and the downpipe got flattened nearly every race. It did teach me to weld, since I was newly married and quite poor and could not afford paying someone to fix it!
