THE WEEKLY FEED: LaPorte dragging bars, Videos gone wild, off-road racing!


Danny LaPorte will go down in infamy as perhaps the most talented and accomplished American racer ever. By winning a 500cc National Championship, a member of the American Team in 1981 that started our domination in the Motocross des Nations, his 250cc World Championship, winning the Baja 1000 for three consecutive years, was a Factory member of the Cagiva Paris-Dakkar team, won a world class Rally and was top American at the 1989 ISDE in Germany give him incredible credentials. . But his greatest accomplishment is he’s one of the nicest humans on the planet. Oh, by the way there have been very few racers who had Danny’s ability to race and control the brutal sand tracks around the globe. In his day he ate them up much like Jeffrey Herlings does today.

I found this shot in a post by Tony Blazier. He finds old content that makes the mind reel. Pretty sure that this was 1990 or ’91. Yamaha WR250, their version of a motocross based machine fit with an 18-inch rear wheel and a big tank…Huh? Isn’t that what KTM, Husky, Honda and Yamaha do now with their cross-country closed course machines? I tested with Yamaha’s Ed Scheidler, a man who taught me more about ‘thinking’ about what the bike was doing, rather than just twisting the slide out of the carburetor. The suspension was cushed up a bit, the powerband identical to the YZ, but fit with a wide-ration transmission. What I remember most was ‘wanting’ to love this bike. Unfortunately the gaps in the transmission were weird and I like the stock YZ better.
