THE WEEKLY FEED: KEVIN HINES & THE CRE HONDA 2-STROKE

A HISTORY LESSON

Kevin Hines broke the Husqvarna stranglehold on the National Enduro championship with his title in 1987 while racing for the KTM factory. Kevin went on to become one of the most versatile racers in the U.S. dabbling in Rally’s, racing the ISDE and was a force in the early 100-miler series put on by Dave Coombs. In the mid 90’s Kevin became the CRE importer and raced selected events on the machine he sold. The machine came out of Italy, was a perimeter famed Honda CR250 and was fit with enduro lighting and enduroized suspension. Kevin switched to a Paioli fork, which was a copy of the KYB and was considered to be one of the best off-road dampers at the time.

Loretta Lynn’s 1987: Kevin Hines had a tough nut to crack racing in an era where Terry Cunningham, Scott Summers and Scott Plessinger were the working mans racer. Kevin dominated the 100-Miler in spite of breaking off his front fender early on in the race.

Kevin was always considered to be one of the fittest off-road athletes and since his retirement from dirt bike racing he has been a force in the bicycle world and won his third Cyclocross title (Masters Men 45-49) this year.

WOLF: BACK IN  THE DAY

In 1987 I fell in love with the Honda CR250. The machine was light, had incredible power that was broad, rideable and strong. I was racing pretty heavily in District 37 enduros and campaigned a modified machine that I fit with an odometer, an Acerbis tank and protective guards and Race Tech suspension. I had just met Paul Thede and he was a hell of a rider, plus one of the smartest men I had dealt with in the industry. His valving for the CR250 was pure magic and really set Race Tech as one of the top suspension companies in the states.
