BLAST FROM THE PAST

Team Honda’s Rick Johnson won the final moto of the 1987 Motocross des Nations to give his team (Jeff Ward and Bob Hannah) an incredible victory on a brutal and horrendously muddy Unadilla circuit.

Here’s a cool video recap of the final moto at the ’87 des Nations

MY WORLD CHAMPION FRIEND

images-1

I just got off the phone with Danny LaPorte, who is en route to Belgian GP at the infamous Lommel track. DLP told me he hadn’t been there since 1981! And that folks was the Trophee and MX des Nations, the first time America won and of course my World Champion friend was a member of team Honda and on the winning effort. He’s going as an FMF Racing representative and I’m trying to get his take on the event and how it was the last time he race there. I’ll keep you posted.

This shows the brutality of the sand circuit and is considered to be one of the toughest tests in motocross.

BIG BUCK OMA

Steward Baylor (514) swept both motos for the second consecutive round as he reeled off his fourth triumph in the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV (OMA) Nationals on his Everrev KTM/Kenda/Fly Racing 250 XC.

The Buck Run—co-sanctioned by the MXC and WFO series—served as a round four makeup race after the originally scheduled event at this venue got rained out last month. Baylor, however, showed no sign of rust, chasing and then passing early leader Jimmy Jarrett in each 45-minute heat. Jarrett went 2-2 for second with Adam Bonneur a 3-3 third.

Jarrett nabbed the $100 FMF Holeshot Award in the first moto aboard his JJR Off-road/Dunlop/Moose-backed KTM 450 XC-F but couldn’t hold off Baylor for more than a few miles. Once Baylor got in front, he stretched his lead slowly but surely—11 seconds after the first lap, 12 seconds after the second, another 17 on the third and final circuit—with Jarrett probably trying too hard and making mistakes as a result, with Bonnneur also suffering the same fate.

Steward Baylor on a tear.

Moto two saw Jarrett once again jump to an early lead but this time holding it for more than a lap.

Baylor said, “His speed was awesome and his lines were flawless, as always. It’s hard to capitalize on a mistake when a rider won’t make a mistake; that’s the biggest issue when riding with Jimmy: It’s hard to get him to make a mistake.”

Jarrett made one last push on the final lap of the day when he saw Baylor get stuck. Unfortunately for Jarrett, he also found himself bogged down and settled for second again.

COASTAL OHV AREA OFFERS “COOL” RIDING DURING SUMMER HEATWAVE

As inland temperatures on the West Coast soar past the 100 degree mark, QWR wants to remind the OHV community about a 300-acre sand-dune/beach riding area in Northern California. The Samoa Dunes Recreation Area is managed by the BLM and offers recreationists a chance to enjoy OHV, fishing, beachcombing, birdwatching, and picnicking in the cool coastal temperatures that exist in the Eureka area.

Samoa+Dunes+ATVs Samoa+Dunes+general+Sign+Flags

This area is one of the secret OHV treasures in the Western States. Where else can you fish, watch for ships going in and out of Humboldt Bay, challenge yourself to the 4WD obstacle courses, ride on the beach, or take pictures of your ATV or SxS at the entrance to one of the many WW2-era ammo bunkers that dot the landscape?

This is a family-oriented riding area that serves all skill levels. There is open riding on the beach along with many sand-trails that can provide you with hours of fun.

The Samoa Dunes is a day-use area. However, there is a county park adjacent to the dunes where users can either tent camp or base their activities from a toy-hauler. There is a “sand highway” that connects the county park to the Samoa Dunes.

QWR believes the Samoa Dunes is a must visit area for riders who want to enjoy beach/sand-oriented motorized recreation with their family and/or friends.

If you are lucky, you may even see an occasional whale that strays into Humboldt Bay or watch a tug boat tow out a lumber or chip barge. Finally, this is a great case example of how your CA OHV “Green Sticker” funds are used as a force multiplier in the partnership that exists between the BLM and the OHMVR Division.

STEWARD BAYLOR TOPS RATTLESNAKE NATIONAL ENDURO

Steward-Baylor-Rattlesnake

After starting off with the ninth fastest time in the opening test of the day, Steward Baylor came on strong for the remainder of the event at the Rattlesnake Enduro, round seven of the Kenda AMA National Enduro Series, presented by Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, to claim his second win of the season, beating his brother, Grant, by just under a minute.

Since winning the opening round of the series in South Carolina, Steward has encountered a multitude of problems, including a badly broken collarbone two days before the second round of the schedule. However, with his win today, and the fact that current points leader Kailub Russell finished a disappointing sixth, tightened up the points chase considerably.

Grant Baylor, who is part of the lethal AmPro Yamaha team, won the fourth test outright and then tied with his brother, Steward, for the fastest time in the fifth test, giving the South Carolina second overall.

Beta USA’s Jesse Groemm is getting back to form after spending most of the season dealing with a severe concussion and finished third in Pennsylvania, just 51 seconds behind Grant on his two-stroke 300 RR.

Russell was sixth and didn’t have much to say for himself after the race, but was obviously disappointed. Meanwhile, Nick Fahringer was making his first race back after spending several months rehabbing a torn ligament in his knew. The AirGroup Racing Husqvarna rider finished seventh.

We’ve been waiting for over 6 months for the Sedonas to come back in stock and they are finally here. We received a reasonable amount of the 110/100-18s but only a few of the 120s. We also received a small shipment of Shinkos. These are our top two favorite tires. Both brands work very well for rocky, rooty trail conditions and also work well for a wide variety of other conditions.
