Heikki Mikkola, aka the “Flying Finn” was tough and physical in his riding style, not delicate and painted with finesse like Roger DeCoster. Heikki was the first Finish racer to win a Motocross World Championship, taking his  first 500 Motocross World Championship on a Husqvarna in 1974. He jumped back into the 250-class in  1976 where he won the 250 cc World Championship for Husqvarna and became the first rider to win a 250 cc and a 500 cc Motocross World Championship. In 1977 Heikki signed with Yamaha and he rewarded them with consecutive 500 cc World Championships. One interesting note about Heikki, his throttle side wrist was broken badly in  a crash and was nearly fused solid. In order to turn the throttle he had regrip and use his entire arm. That’s one gnarly dude.

Bob Hannah, even at the end of his career was finicky and hard headed. Somehow the Suzuki boys got him to toss a leg over the DR350 in 1989 and he rewarded the Dirt Bike cameras with some cliff climb action.

This bike, a 1988 KTM350 played a pivotal role in my dirt bike growth. Dick Burleson shot this of me up in the UP of Michigan, where we had been testing for a week. It didn’t suck. We loaded up and pointed it towards Illinois for a National Enduro. A nasty storm left the trail snowy and yours truly hit a downed tree I didn’t see under the leaves. I ended up bouncing off of it, and hit a tree head on. Broke my arm and my leg good. I got my buddy Charles Halcomb to get me on a plane and spent ten days in the hospital getting bolted back together. In the end it made me train hard to get fit enough to try and make the ISDE team.
