THE WEEKLY FEED: HANNAH AND THE TRANS-AMA

A HISTORY LESSON

Bob Hannah, 1976 Sears Point Trans AM. The racers craved the natural terrain at Sears point, it acting like a lesson for the Americans who were still trying to find a way to battle with the dominant European motocrossers. 1976 was the Hurricanes coming out year as he crushed America’s super hero Marty Smith in the 125 Nationals, who had won every 125 moto but the opener in 1975, only to go win-less in ’76. Hannah became consumed with winning against the ‘euros’ and his hero Roger DeCoster was a driving force to win. RD won the Trans-AMA series in ’76 and ’77, it took Bob until 1978 to win the championship. Gracias to the Mark Kiel files for his photo.

JEFFREY HERLINGS PUTTING IN LAPS AT ALDON BAKER’S COMPOUND

Herlings has put a large stamp on the fact that he is the fastest man on the planet with his dominant wins at our final National and with his GP win in Florida. The Dutch rider is known for his sand prowess, but the test at the Florida GP was the brutal weather and a track that had huge jumps. Herlings took on the monster leaps that made Eli Tomac grimace and his fitness was not questioned. Aldon Baker may have helped just a bit here.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

With the ISDE on my mind I scrounged through my files and found this pic, which was an ISDE Qualifier up in Washington State, the year was 1986. I had big dreams to race the Six Days and this event featured great trail and fun final moto, all good lessons to something that I would realize four years later. Here I’m replacing the front fender, which I had torn off in a terrain test. That’s Geoff Ballard cruising the pits behind me. The bike, the first water-cooled Husqvarna four stroke was a superb machine and since I was riding quite a bit with Larry Roeseler at the time, and he was the 4-stroke king I had a teacher who taught me the intricacies of starting, riding and maintaining a 4-stroke machine, necessary since I was a 2-stroke guy to the core.
