Carlsbad California, 1974. The USGP. The final turn of the final moto was electric with Factory Husqvarna’s Heikki Mikkola chewing on the rear fender of Gerrit Wolsink’s Factory Suzuki. Tecate 500, 1979. Team Kolbe Can-Am. Randy Gauvin far left, Dan Quinn, Twebb and my mentor Pete Smith on the far right. This was my first Tecate and it was a 2-dayer, 250 miles a day and quite a brute. I had a great ride going into day two (somewhere in the top 10) when my chain broke in a sandwash- it took me 20-minutes to find it! I had a chain breaker and a link, cut the chain, moved it wheel as far foward as possible and the chain was slight bowstring tight. I ended up damaging the countershaft and DNF’d close to the finish.
