GNCC Kickoff 2002, Kirton Ranch, Okeechobee, Florida

Coming into the 2002 season the heavy hitters came from Team Suzuki Off-road. Rodney Smith was the reigning champion and Steve Hatch (#4) finished fourth in 2001. At the time Mike Lafferty (#7) was still engaged in racing GNCCs and National Enduros being one of the few 4-strokes in an arena still dominated by 2-stroke equipment. Yamaha had a strong effort with Jason Raines, Barry Hawk and supported rider Robby Jenks (#8). Jimmy Jarrett (#17) showed up on a KTM and Russell Pearson (#488) made the trek from Nevada to race in the fast, sand track that had always been a unique venue for the woods based GNCC series. And while Steve Hatch grabbed the all crucial holeshot, he only finished one lap. Yamaha’s Jason Raines (not in the photo) won the event, Kawasaki mounted Fred Andrews (you can see his front fender on the left) ended up second and Rodney Smith (also not in the frame) started his year by taking the final podium slot. Desert racer Russell Pearson took home fourth on his YZ250. Thanks to Adam Campbell for the shot.

Wiseco Piston is the Title Sponsor this year as they will be there in full force with the latest product offerings. Stop by their booth and meet the tech guys and the new owners will be on hand to meet all of you and go tear up some trail as they are avid riders as well. Bill Henslee from E2BTEK will be on hand as he has not missed a Turkey Run in over ten years, maybe even longer.  KTM will have its celebrities on hand with the big rig and all the new 2018 KTM off road and MX machines. We have a dedicated off road loop for KTM and we shut down the MX track at set times so your KTM MX experience is genuine and you can get a great feel for what amazing bikes these are. We will have piles of goodies to give away from our amazing sponsors most likely we will have a 50/50 raffle to raise money for RHETT syndrome to help our dear friend Kevin FOLEY and his family as his daughter suffers from this terrible disease. Please feel free to support the research to end this disease on you own as it affects one of our own. We have a great weekend planned and I hope you can make it! Also, we set up a new FaceBook page called Eastern Offroad Adventures to give us all a new location to share photos, flyers, and stories. We will also post any organized rides we may be working on. I look forward to seeing you, kind Regards Steve Johnson”

In 2001 I raced the Elsinore GP on a big Husaberg. It was a last second decision, one inspired by my compatriot Ron Lawson when he said we needed some seat time on the machine. I had never raced there, and to be brutally honest…I had about as much fun as playing squat tag on a CRF450 rear tire with a stuck throttle. It was super fast, incredibly hacky and my arms pumped up into steel girders way before I hit the one lap completed mark. I felt completely incompetent. Later in the day I watched Mike Kiedrowski kill it on a Yosh DRZ400 and realized that it was a good thing that I didn’t take up racing as a form of paying the rent.
