BLAST FROM THE PAST: Danny LaPorte Atlanta SX 1985

This was a bittersweet day for Danny LaPorte, racing for Factory Husqvarna in the 1985 Atlanta Supercross . Leading,  his shift lever broke off a few laps from the end , a snap shot into his year racing the Husky.  Jeff Ward would go on to win the Supercross championship. Danny told us that the Husky handled well, but was slow and porky.

TESTING-TESTING- CAN YOU READ ME?

Over the weekend we popped out to the desert (sounds vanilla but it’s actually and hour and half drive) met up with Donnie Emler the owner/operator of FMF and Danny LaPorte, former World Champ and just a superb human. My brother Mike and Tip were along, with Ryan Koch my riding buddy and test rider here at the mag. I had some products I was testing, Donnie and Danny were testing the new Extreme FMF muffler (super long, used by Graham Jarvis;  brother Mike was the only four stroke guy in the group and is still loving his Rekluse clutched RMZ450.

Loaded up and ready to rock and roll. My 300 TPI continues to evolve as I’m testing suspension from various companies. Power wise it’s fit with a GET ECU and an S3 head- both are key to strong bottom power. The FMF Gnarly pipe and silencer work well and compliment the power band nicely. And I’m constantly testing tires as witnessed by the wheels in the back of the truck.

Donnie is a hill climbing nut and this particular climb looked like it had a fun factor of zero!
I just fit on an S3 Cylinder saver that Jeff Slavens sent me. KTM 2-stroke owners have broken their cylinders when they smash the pipe hard enough break the cylinder at the exhaust manifold. The S3 Cylinder Saver bolts on quickly, strengthens and protects the manifold in a direct pipe hit.

 

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

This is at the 1995 Laughlin Hare Scrambles, one of my favorite races of all-time! Actually it’s the day before and I’m getting acquainted with this Dick Wilk modified KTM 300. Dick built some incredible machines for me, his suspension was marvelous ( I believe because he too raced and rode and wanted it to work for himself). He also turned them into missiles and many times I would try to get him to detune them because they were too fast. I always did quite well at this race because it was tight, and very technical for half the event.
