BACK IN THE DAY

“Gassin” Gaylon Mosier 1953-1980

Most everyone that was into motocross in the 70’s really loved watching “Gassin” Gaylon Mosier race. He was one of the fastest, smoothest and most stylish riders there was. My buddy Mark Kiel has been running a tribute to the Gaylon on FB and here’s some of the images that he’s posted.

CODY WEBB IS THE KING OF THE MOTOS CHAMP AGAIN

Webb and Robert Top Podium at King of the Motos

Webb 16KOM_ 034
Cody Webb is America’s best extreme off-roader. He won the brutal King of the Motos for the 3rd time.

FMF KTM Factory riders Cody Webb and Taylor Robert topped the podium at the fifth running of the King of the Motos event. This marked Webb’s third career victory at the challenging off-road race.

When the flag waived to start the main event, both Webb and Robert got a great jump off the line and came out leading the way at the top of the starting hill. The two riders were soon joined by another three to have a five-man battle for the first lap of the 9-mile course.

Robert 16KOM_ 090
Taylor Robert battled with both Webb and Haaker for the win. He ended up second.

At the end of the second lap Webb reported, “Taylor and I were battling for the lead when we both made a mistake which allowed Colton (Haaker) to pass. I was able to get back on track quicker than Taylor which allowed me to start working my way toward Colton again.”

16KOM_ 247
Colton Haaker finished in 3rd place. There were a total of 22 racers that started, with only 8 of them completing 7 laps in the 3 hour time limit

On the next lap, Haaker suffered a big crash which allowed Webb to pass for the lead. Haaker would come back up to challenge Webb a final time, but Webb would prevail. Once making the pass stick, Webb went on to pull to a nearly two minute lead. He maintained that cushion for the remainder of the race before crossing the finish line to claim the win. Robert was able to come back and challenge Haaker for the runner-up position and held on for a 2nd place finish.

“This course was much more challenging than in the years past,” stated Webb. “It was shorter and more technical which meant we had to encounter lappers sooner than we normally would. We actually passed all the way up to 7th place which made it a little stressful. But overall, after the rain went away, the course was really good and I had a fun day.”

IS JAMES STEWART DONE?

Word from Yoshimura Suzuki is that James suffered from blurred vision during the Oakland Supercross main. When we talked to Mike Webb (yes my brother) he said that James was fine during the weeks practice sessions and his speed looked good. Following the Oakland SX Mike told me that the vision issues came on when James started pushing it past the 85% point (quite necessary when you’ve got Anderson and Reed breathing up your caboose). James is headed to the Red Bull testing center for more evaluations.

The bottom line is that serious concussions and how the brain reacts to them is not an exact science and more often than not, rest is the number one cure. Do I see James coming back for the Nationals? I can only hope since I know that the rumor was that he planned to retire at the end of the year. I honestly can’t think of a more catastrophic way for one of the most decorated and fascinating racers to grace our sport to be forced into retirement.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

wolfYZ2501974
Pretty sure this is 1975, Valley Cycle Park and I’m racing brother Mike’s 1974 YZ250. This was one of the trickest machines to ever hit the dealer floor, and Mike made it better. He painted the tank full euro, moved the shocks up and ran Bilstein’s. I was never a good 250 rider, but this bike was super light and fast. My little brother Tip raced it after this, since Mike had injured his kidneys in a crash and couldn’t ride for a solid year!
