The place: 1972 Carlsbad. Tim Hart is leading Husqvarna’s Bengt Aberg with Bultaco’s Serge Bacou in tow. The race was labeled as a Trans-AMA and co-branded as a Grand Prix, though it did not offer any FIM points. The winner was Maico-mounted Swede Ake Jonsson, who actually swept the last nine rounds of the series that fall.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Although I have mainly been an open class rider and in ’81/82 the HQV 430XC was my favorite machine by far, I had an itch to try a 250 for a time. Two issues here, the Husky 250 XC was slow and I was on the large side. I got with a good friend, Rick Jones, who was a genius motor builder and he lowered the cylinder, ported the crap out of it, built a pipe that was off the 430 and he turned it into a missile. I raced a couple of Nationals one it and top fived both of them.
