BLAST FROM THE PAST

This is a great shot of Team Husqvarna’s Mike Melton in 1983. Mike Melton was one of the fab three (Burleson-Cunningham-Melton) racing for Husqvarna in the early 80s. Dick Burleson was coming to the end of his racing career and Mike was a young kid who was brutally fast in tight gnarly woods. In 1981 Burleson got chewed on by Terry Cunningham and Mike, both of whom were trying to make their marque by stopping DB’s 7-year National Enduro title win streak and beat their boss. Both worked for Husqvarna, under Burleson. Burleson retained his title-barely in ’81, TC (Cunningham was second and Melton in third. The next year TC won the title but had Mike right in his blind spot the entire year. In 1983 Mike won the National Enduro title, finished Top American at the ISDE in Wales and was named AMA’s Amateur Athlete of the year.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

Wow, jumping into the Indian Dunes Santa Clara river. The machine, an 1983 HQV 500XC. I felt that the engine was a big step back from the 430. It vibrated the wax out of your ears and had a power band that belched hard, but lacked any width. I ended up sticking my 420 Auto motor in this chassis, which featured the well canted Ohlins shocks. It was wide at the calfs, but offered good action. BTW, when these brakes got wet the stopping power vanished!
