BLAST FROM THE PAST: Barry Higgins

Barry Higgins helped bring the infamous Ghost CZ team to the public eye. ABC Wide World of Sports was filming the 1969 Pepperell Inter-AM which brought eyes to the very young sport. Barry Higgins had toughened his skills racing on the east coast and was a huge underdog at the event where he was racing a Ghost CZ 360 against a very strong and experienced European contingent. Husqvarna’s Arne Kring won the event, but Barry finished fifth overall and was first American. This photo is from 1972, a year where Barry had good results in the 500 class. He went on to be a very strong off-road rider for years.

WOLF: BACK IN THE DAY

I love this shot by Mark Kariya. It’s Parc Ferme at the 1991 Czechoslovakia ISDE. I raced a rented KTM 300 and I packed my suspension, bars and a Tecnosel saddle from home and fit them onto the machine. The green muffler? Acerbis made an incredible composite muffler that was long, quiet and made for smooth power. At that time it made passing the strict sound test quite easy. The lid? A Jerry Bernardo special. JB painted a bunch of helmets for me, all are classics and I’ve kept them all.
