BLAST FROM THE PAST: Trophee des Nations 40 Years ago!

40 Years Ago– With the MX des Nations looming, and the American team sidelined due to travel restrictions let’s give you one of the men responsible for turning America into a des Nations dominator- Danny LaPorte. This is Lommel, a brutal sand track in Belgium and it’s the Trophee des Nations where the underdog team of four U.S. riders proved  that America had caught on to the sport of motocross. Donnie Hansen, Danny LaPorte, Johnny O’Mara and Chuck Sun swept the Trophee des Nations (250cc) and the Motocross des Nations (500cc) that year, beginning a period of total domination.  LaPorte took to the unique Lommel circuit based on his early motocross days where he honed his skills on long, flowing and brutally beat up sand tracks in California. Danny moved to Europe in 1982, racing for Factory Yamaha and became the first American to win a 250cc GP World Championship.

Just over a week after Jett Lawrence wrapped up the 2021 AMA Pro Motocross 250MX Championship,  Erik Kehoe announced that he will step down as Manager of Team Honda HRC. The Californian, who has headed the team since 2018, will be leaving the racing world and focusing on home life. Kehoe was a Honda-backed professional racer in the late ’80s and early ’90s before managing the Honda of Troy/Yamaha of Troy race program for seven seasons. He also served an earlier stint managing the factory team from the 2002 season through 2012. During Kehoe’s management tenures, Team Honda HRC earned five AMA Pro Motocross National Championships and two AMA Supercross Championships.
