SOUTH POINT WORCS GALLERY

This week’s South Point race was a big break from the usual WORCS format. It was too short to be a traditional west coast GP, too off-beat to be a motocross and certainly wasn’t a desert race or an arenacross. But whatever it was, it struck a chord with off-road riders, who turned out in big numbers and seemed to enjoy the format.

The race course was mostly laid out in the catacombs beneath the South Point Arena in Las Vegas. The facility is used regularly for rodeos, so there’s an arena as well as large indoor areas with both concrete and dirt. There was also an outdoor section with about eight turns and several jumps, one of which went through the mammoth freeway marquee. The lap time was in the two-minute area, and most races were 30 minutes, so the event was unlike anything that WORCS has done in the past.

Pro races were 45 minutes long and held at night, with spectators watching from seats in the arena. In the motorcycle Pro class, Blayne Thompson continued his hot streak, leading most of the event. Here are some of the images of this one-of-a-kind race.
