Colton Udall and Justin Jones won the SCORE San Felipe by a large margin this weekend, riding a privateer Honda that they assembled at Nicoll Racing. “It was actually the same bike that I rode in the 24 Hours of Glen Helen,” reported Colton. “The Honda 450X is still a great bike for this type of racing. They’re cheap to get and easy to keep running.”
Colton’s WFOX team is basically running on table scraps, but they managed to get the two top positions in the race. The Rider of Record in second place was Mark Samuels, who was still recovering from a pre-race injury. He shared riding duties with Ray Dal Soglio. The Samuels team had problems early in the race and had to spend most of the time playing catch up.
“I started a few bikes back, and went through the pack pretty quick. Then Ricky Brabec passed me about mile 37. He was riding really well,” said Udall. “I passed Max Eddy (Brabec’s partner) back for the lead at mile 105, and then I think he fell around mile 112.” Udall rode the bike for the first 165 miles solo, then handed it off to Jones, who rode the last 95 miles without any challenges. Jones finished with a 45-minute lead.
After the finish, both Udall and Brabec rushed across the border to get to Lucerne Valley in California for the start of the Desert M.C. National Hare & Hound. Brabec finished second behind Gary Sutherlin, and Udall was 9th, riding his San Felipe prerunner. The next SCORE race will be the inaugural Bud Light Baja Sur 500, which will run entirely in the southern part of the peninsula on April 16 and 19.
