OCT 21– SMITH DEFENDS GNCC CROWN |
In a do or die situation for Rodney Smith heading into the final round at Crawfordsville, Indiana, the three-time GNCC champ held a narrow points lead over Fred Andrews and Mike Lafferty. It was a must win for the top three riders, especially Andrews and Lafferty, but the longtime veteran Smith shined through with the win and took his fourth championship to date. Rodney Smith now finds himself third on the all-time championship wins list (Scott Summers and Ed Lojak lead with five). How close was everyone else to dethroning Smith on Sunday? Fred Andrews was close, but no cigar. Fred powered his Kawasaki to second for the day and second overall for the series, finishing 16 points behind Smith. Mike Lafferty, who had recently come off an injury, took third overall at the Ironman GNCC and took third place overall in points. Jason Raines decided to sit out from not only a nagging broken leg injury, but also a broken collarbone. It has to be a heartbreaker for Raines, considering he had a commanding points lead up until the halfway point of the series. Next year will bring more close and exciting racing, so be sure to check out a GNCC near you if you haven?t already! Congratulations are in order for Team Suzuki rider Rodney Smith and to all the other riders who have helped make GNCC racing such a success. Overall Point Standings: |
