MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS QUALIFYING

Team USA was the top qualifier at the Red Bull  Motocross of Nations Saturday. But the team didn’t get there in quite the fashion that was expected. The field is separated into MX1 (450), MX2 (250) and MX3 (Open) heats for qualifying. Each country can drop its lowest score in order to qualify for the A class on Sunday. It came as quite a surprise that the Americans had to drop Ryan Dungey’s score in the MX1 class.
That moto started off with Italy’s Antonio Cairoli taking the lead within a few turns. Then he just checked out. Dungey, on the other hand, was buried in the pack and had to work for every place. It looked to be a classic Dungey moto, with him moving through the pack. But things happened slowly for him, and by the end of the 30-minute-plus two moto, he was only able to get into fourth place. Australian Brett Metcalf was second ahead of France’s Paul Gautier.
The MX2 moto went much better for the heavily favored U.S. squad. Trey Canard got into the lead, but then had Germany’s Ken Roczen shadow him throughout the moto. Late in the race, Roczen passed Canard for the lead. On the last lap, Roczen fell over and handed the lead and the win to Canard. Belgium’s Jeremy Van Horebeek was third ahead of American Zach Osbourne, who was riding for Puerto Rico.
Andrew Short dominated the MX3 moto, starting with an incredible holeshot. For the first half of the race, he couldn’t gap Ben Townley and Kyle Regal (also riding for Puerto Rico), but eventually, Short got a small cushion.
