M4SX MINI SX AT DEL MAR

Michael Blose was the man of Del Mar. He won both the mini and midsize pro classes, backing up his performance at the Mini Moto SX in Vegas.

It’s been three days and I’m still feeling the burning in my thighs. Racing four classes at the Mini SX took its toll on my plus-30 body, but it was well worth it. The track was fun, technical and the dirt was amazing. The track had some great whoop sections that really kept riders on their game. The whoops put quite a few non-respecting riders in the dirt. This year the event took place over two days: Saturday was practice and a freestyle show and Sunday was 100% racing. With 350 entries, Sunday was a long day and the ticket to not getting too bored was to enter multiple classes. Hats off to the crew. I wouldn’t want to be Ken Johnson on race days like that–everyone has a complaint and a problem and Ken is the guy who has to deal with it. Also, the scoring crew has a fun job, keeping track of racing and then as quickly as possible getting the results up and new motos posted.

This wasn’t Costella’s weekend on mini bikes. He won the overall title for the four race series but didn’t win the midsize pro or mini pro class at Del Mar.

This years event had 34 motos and many with last chance qualifiers to make it to a main. In between the motos a really trick desert buggy pulled out on the track for what looked to be a little quick cruise around the stadium. The meathead behind the wheel then decided it would be a great idea to roost all over the track in his fancy painted, high-dollar desert car. He smashed over berms and blew hay bales to pieces. His next jock move was to spray the pits, high dollar rigs included, with dirt. Since the track used the expensive horseracing dirt riders and crew had to use hand shovels to fix the track and pick up every last piece of hay from the exploded hay bales–because the dirt can’t be contaminated with anything. The little display of coolness added almost an hour of sitting around to an already long day. The decision to let that guy on the track rates right up there with sticking metal in power sockets.

Costella and Blose had a great battle going for a short time until Blose made a great move on Costella for the pass. Just a straight away later, Costella went down, dislocating his shoulder and taking him out of the running for the small bikes.

Race action was awesome and Michael Blose took the win in both pro classes, mini and midsize. Costella led Blose for a brief time in the first mini pro moto until Blose threw down a beauty of a block pass. Then Costella proceeded to crash and pull his shoulder out of socket. With 34 motos there was a full day of racing and fun. The whole M4SX series went over awesome and hopefully the series takes place next year and if it does, grab your mini bike and get to the events, no doubt there is a class for you.

The 16′ open class saw a bit of a battle with Costella and Jeff Wiltoh but Costella kept Wiltoh just far enough behind to take the win even after popping his should out earlier in the day.
