HENGEVELD & CAMPBELL SQUEEK OUT 29 PALMS–APRIL 7

The Marines left the town of Twentynine Palms virtually deserted as they shipped out to the Persian Gulf, so the local merchants and businessmen were delighted to see District 37 roll into town. It was the third round of the AMA Big Six GP series, and as is usually the case with district GPs, the turnout was massive. The money race of the weekend was Saturday’s team race. It was a classic battle of motocrossers versus off-road guys as Kawasaki’s Bobby Bonds and Scott Sheak were matched with Honda’s Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld for most of the race. Bonds and Sheak pulled out quite a lead in the early laps around the high-speed, seven mile course, while the Honda duo settled into a comfortable second. Behind them, Mark Tilley and Scott Meyers held off Team Green’s Mike Childress and the old guy team of Larry Roeseler and Paul Krause. Late in the race, things began to happen.

Meyers got a flat tire and then Bonds blew a motor. When the checkered flag came out, the order was the Campbell team, followed by the Childress team and the Roeseler team.

Hengeveld and Campbell came out equipped with a set of 650s and 450s. The two of them went one-two, respectively, in the unclassified race earlier in the day and then decided the 450 was the best bike for the team event.
