HANGTOWN: 2022 PRO MOTOCROSS RESULTS

After the dominant performance from the Honda quartette of Chase Sexton, Ken Roczen, Jett Lawrence and Hunter Lawrence at Fox Raceway, the Hangtown National at Prairie City in Sacramento, California was targeted for redemption for virtually every other team. The man who emerged from it all on top was Jason Anderson, who captured his first overall win in the AMA outdoor nationals after 12 years of trying. It wasn’t easy, though. His 1-3 score topped Chase Sexton’s 2-2 score by virtue of the extra point given for a moto win. He had none other than Eli Tomac to thank for that point, who took the second moto from Sexton late in the race. In the 250 class, an ailing Jett Lawrence was the winner despite the efforts of a vastly improved Justin Cooper and home-town hero Michael Mosiman. 450 MOTO ONE

Jason Anderson turned his fastest laps late in moto one. Photo by Brandon Krause.

Chase Sexton and Jason Anderson started the race bar to bar and that’s how the finished in an intensely close battle.  In the early laps it looked like it might be an uneventful win for Sexton, though, as he inched away from Anderson while Ken Roczen slipped farther and farther behind. Then, in the last quarter of the race, Anderson turned in some of his fastest laps. He passed Sexton for the lead with four laps to go, but it didn’t end there. Sexton came back on the final lap to come within inches of retaking the lead. Roczen finished 30 seconds back with Eli Tomac running a quiet race in front of Christian Craig, Ryan Dungey and Antonio Cairoli.

450 MOTO TWO

Chase Sexton went 2-2 for second, but extended his points lead. Photo by Brandon Krause.

It was none other than Antonio Cairoli who was the fastest rider to  the first turn. Ken Roczen was right behind in full sprint mode, and within a couple of turns he took the lead. Roczen then set some blazing laps, but so did his teammate Chase Sexton, and it wasn’t long before there were two Hondas battling up front. Jason Anderson was back around 8th, with some very fast riders in front of him, including Ryan Dungey and Eli Tomac. Eventually, Sexton took over and it seemed he had the moto under control. But Tomac found more speed at the halfway mark. He passed everyone and steadily closed in on Sexton. Then it was another intense battle. The same storyline from the first moto repeated itself, only this time it was Tomac who passed Sexton, only  to almost give it back just a few turns from the finish. In the end, Tomac held on for the moto win, which gave the overall victory to Anderson, who finished third, some 9 seconds behind the lead.

250 MOTO ONE

Justin Cooper came out swinging with one of his familiar holeshots in moto one with Jalek Swoll  in second. Cooper pulled a few seconds ahead while Swoll had to seal with intense pressure from hometown boy Michael Mosiman. Eventually Mosiman took second for himself, leaving Swoll to deal with the Lawrence brothers. First Jett took third, then Hunter took over–but only briefly. He fell and allowed several riders past. Jett remained in third behind Mosiman and Cooper for the rest of the moto, but in the late laps brother Hunter made a push to get close. Afterward, Jett missed podium interviews in order to recover. He had apparently been sick earlier in the week.

250 MOTO 2

Justin Cooper once again got the jump with rival Jett Lawrence right on his tail. First moto winner Michael Mosiman was back in fifth, but that wouldn’t last long. He crashed hard after a few laps, bending his bike and forcing retirement. In the meantime, Cooper made an off-track excursion and allowed Jett Lawrence into the lead. That wouldn’t change for the rest of the race, although several riders made a run at him. At one point, Jo Shimoda was the fastest rider on the track. He moved into second and was making up time, but fell down, giving second back to Cooper. Then Hunter Lawrence emerged to pass Cooper. He then set out after his brother, but run out of time. At the finish, Jett was clearly exhausted, but he still captured the overall and extended his lead in the 250 standings.

QUALIFYING

Practice got underway under cloudy skies, allowing for ideal track conditions. The results saw at least two riders making a statement that they would not roll over again. In the 450 class, Jason Anderson set the fastest time, which he accomplished in the second session on a rough track. Chase Sexton’s first-session time was close, but he was over a second behind in session two. In the 250 class, Justin Cooper was on top of the first practice session by a healthy margin–and even faster than the 450s. His time survived challenges from Hunter Lawrence and RJ Hampshire in session two.
