DIRTBIKE PRODUCT TEST: AXO PRIME BOOT

THE ISSUE–
Building cost effective, yet high end racing footwear that reacts and feels like a big buck full-grain Italian shoe for a price closer to that of an Asian split-grain motocross boot.

THE PRODUCT
AXO’s Prime boot is an all-new design that uses oodles of injection molded plastics throughout the design. Incredible buzzwords go with the Prime footwear, like ‘anatomic left and right angles, shapes and assembly. Unique open cell shapes that disperse energy from blows to plastics and padding. Floating 3D ‘Dog-Bone’ torsion bar support resists side to side twisting and flex. It’s fit with a  unique molded rubber compound over ankle, heel and instep.’ The Prime has a soft rubber molded gaiter, a replaceable sole, and a buckle system that floats and follow the contour of the boots shell.

THE WORD
This is one futuristic and hi-tech boot. It requires some serious break-in time so that you can actually feel and use the shifter and brake pedal. The buckle system has a final lock down that is sometimes finicky requiring a stiff snap to get it to lock. Our testers were divided on the fit and feel, though the majority felt that the toe box is too tall and large, many times requiring a change in the shifters height so you can get your toe under it. As far as protection the AXO Prime is excellent, and after three months of abuse is holding up quite well. Dirt Bike’s final grade; she gets a B based on design, looks and protection and the rating would have been higher if ‘feel’ wasn’t so clouded with flex-less attention.
