Destry’s Endurocross Race Report (Ontario, Ca.)

Race Day:

After our two practice sessions it was time for our hot lap that would determine our gate pick. I felt I had a good lap, and posted the 7th fastest time.

Heat 1:

Of course all the heats are stacked, but I knew Taddy and my teammate Justin Soule were going to be the toughest along with 3 or 4 other guys that I could think of. I had a good jump, and was right behind Taddy after the first corner Then right before the matrix section Justin put a good pass on me to take over second. The next two laps I just wanted to stay close to Justin and see if I could pull off a top 2 and make it into the main. Unfortunately I messed up in the big rock pile, and my swingarm hit the last rock really hard and derailed the chain. By the time I got it back on I knew I had no chance. I passed quite a few guys again, but was far from making it in!

Semi 1:

In the semi they only take the winner and of course this wasn’t going to be easy! Luckily I had another great start and was able to grab the holeshot! I had a little gap early and all I tried to do was just hit my lines and ride smart. It was a great race for me and I felt really confident after pulling off the win. I was happy to know I was back in the main event!

Main Event:

I had a pretty good spot on the gate and was feeling like I could do really well! I had a pretty good jump, but got pinched off by Geoff and had to back off into the first corner, which put me in around 5th. Then going into the first corner I was trying to go wide, and that’s when someone messed up in the log section and I couldn’t go anywhere. By the time we got going again I was in last! When you’re racing with this many great riders you really can’t make mistakes and that’s basically how my main event went! It seemed like everything I was trying wasn’t working and I kept crashing or making dumb mistakes! I made it up to 8th at one point, but the more mistakes I kept making just made it harder for me. I was really bummed and finished a very disappointing 10th.

Overall Summary:

Going into the main event I felt I was riding pretty well, so when things went south for me it was hard for me to be happy with that. My bike set-up was really good and the bike was perfect. I don’t get to race too many of the Endurocross races so when I get the chance I really want to do well! I think my next Endurocross race will be the finale in Vegas!

I’ve only raced 2 of the 4 Endurocross races, but moved up to 10th in points.

Kawasaki’s employee / fan section was really cool! They blocked out a lot of seats and before the race had a little bbq by the race semi.
