DAVIS SURVIVES TO WIN GLEN HELEN 6-HOUR–MARCH 27

Ty Davis hasn’t had the best luck finishing long races in the last year. So he wasn’t making any promises at the start of the Eighth Annual Glen Helen Six Hour, held last Sunday. ‘It’s a new 460cc motor, and we’re just using this race as a shakedown’ he said before the start. It must have shaken quite well, because by the end of the race, he and Terry Fowler had lapped the entire field on the big YZ.

The KTM duo of Scott Myers and Mark Ehrhrdt kept Ty and Terry honest for most of the race, only a minute or so behind. But late in the race, mechanical problems cost them over a lap. That gave second place to Jimmy Lewis (still suffering from numerous Paris Dakar injuries) and Tod Sciaccqua on a Gas Gas. The real hero of the race was Russell Pearson, who rode solo and finished third overall. The Team Dirt Bike entry of Ron Lawson and Gary Jones rode a Cannondale Cross Country to ninth place.
