Stage nine was very close in the 2014 Dakar Rally; so close that the stage winner and the first finisher were separate riders at the end of the day.
Joan Barreda started today second behind yesterday´s stage winner Cyril Despres into the 422 km special stage with the famous steep downhill to the coastal town of Iquique. He was able to catch Despres soon, opened the track and dictated a strong pace. At the final dune section,  Marc Coma closed in and then  it was a waiting game at the finish to see which rider had the shortest time on the fcourse. In the end, Coma won and Barreda finished the stage in second position.
Joan Barreda: ‘Today was the third day in a row when I pretty much opened the track for most of the stage. It was again very difficult to navigate, but I am happy with my speed and gave a very good performance again, passing the finish line as first rider. Marc could gain back almost those two minutes he started behind me. The bike runs perfect and we will continue with a strong pace the next days.’
