LAKEWOOD, Colo. (July 23, 2006) ? Suzuki?s Ricky Carmichael continued his winning ways with a pair of impressive rides en route to his sixth consecutive Toyota AMA Motocross Championship, presented by FMF, overall win today before a crowd of 26,685 at the Toyota Trucks AMA Pro Motocross National at Thunder Valley. Kawasaki?s Ryan Villopoto notched his fourth overall victory of the season in AMA Motocross Lites.
Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., has gone on a tear after losing the season opener to Kawasaki?s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., winning each of the last six races in convincing fashion. All tolled, Carmichael has won 33 of the last 34 AMA Motocross races he has entered and pushed his overall win total to an AMA record 141 for his career.
“It?s always tough to come here because of the elements and altitude,” said Carmichael, who also won the inaugural event at Thunder Valley a year ago. “We are down, like, 22 percent on horsepower due to altitude. It?s always fun to come to a track that is relatively new. This is a special weekend because my friend Ernesto Fonseca was here and I was super pumped to see him.”
Honda rookie rider Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., finished second overall with a 3-2 moto finish, securing his fourth podium of the season. Stewart, who was returning from a high-speed crash that knocked him out of competition last week at Unadilla, finished third with a 2-5.
Carmichael extended his lead in the Toyota AMA Motocross Championship, presented by FMF, to 69 points over Yamaha?s Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla. Carmichael has won nine consecutive AMA Motocross Championships and is now in good shape for a record 10th title.
Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., won his fourth consecutive overall of the season and has taken control of the AMA Motocross Lites points battle, taking a 13-point lead over KTM?s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., in the standings. Suzuki?s Broc Hepler, of Kittanning, Pa., finished second overall with a 4-2 finish in the motos, while Alessi was third (3-3).
The Toyota AMA Motocross Championship, presented by FMF, heads to Washougal, Wash., next week for the Unbound Energy Washougal National on July 30.
