CARMICHAEL TAKES WIN AT MT. MORRIS |
Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Kawasaki?s James Stewart, the opening round winner, began the day with an epic battle in moto one. Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., lead Carmichael for the first 14 laps before a horrific crash in a step-down section after the finish jump handed the lead, and an apparent inside line to the championship, to Carmichael.
Stewart was helped off the track and was later taken to a local hospital with a concussion and did not return for the second moto.
With Stewart out, Carmichael was able to cruise in the second moto and picked up the overall victory with a convincing win. Yamaha?s Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., was second overall with a 2-2 moto finish. Honda?s Davi Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., finished was third (3-3), the first podium of his career coming in just his second start in the Motocross class.
“I was just disappointed to see James had some bad luck today, we were having some fun in the first moto,” said Carmichael. “They say you should take wins anyway you can get them, but that?s not the way I wanted to win that one. The track was short and one of the only problems with that is that you come up on lappers a lot quicker, but they didn?t factor into the race.”
Carmichael took command of the standings in the Toyota AMA Motocross Championship and now leads Reed by nine points. Yamaha?s David Vuillemin is third with 63 points.
Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., used a come-from-behind second place finish in the first moto and a strong win in the second to post the first overall win of his career. Honda?s Josh Grant, Riverside, Calif., had a solid 3-3 moto finish, good for second overall. KTM?s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., last week?s winner in Sacramento, wound up third overall (1-8).
The Toyota AMA Motocross Championship will take a one-week hiatus before resuming on June 11 in Southwick, Mass., for the Suzuki Motocross 338 National presented by Scott USA.
