CARMICHAEL SWEEPS: BUDDS CREEK NATIONAL REPORT

BUDDS CREEK, MD. (June 18, 2006) ? Suzuki?s Ricky Carmichael stretched his winning streak to three with a sweep of the motos today at the FMF Budds Creek National, round four of the Toyota AMA Motocross Championship, presented by FMF. Kawasaki?s Ryan Villopoto won both motos en route to the AMA Motocross Lites overall win.

Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., benefiting from the absence of Kawasaki?s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., who sat out the event with injuries, took charge from the onset and walked away in both motos after receiving early-race challenges from Yamaha?s Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla.

With track temperatures approaching three-digit temperatures, the enthusiastic crowd of 17,600 witnessed why Carmichael has been dubbed the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) as he methodically dissected the coarse, wearing down the competition with his superior conditioning.

Reed posted a 2-2 moto finish, good for second place overall. Honda?s Kevin Windham, of Centreville, Miss., was third with a 5-3.

“It was a good battle (with Chad) and we got going in that second moto,” said Carmichael, “This track is super tough to pass on. It?s tough to get by riders so I had to get a little aggressive or else I would have to follow them.”

The win was a record 136th in Carmichael?s career and extended his lead over Reed to 20 points in the Toyota AMA Motocross Championship, presented by FMF.

Villopoto bounced back from a disappointing finish as week ago at Southwick and propelled himself back into AMA Motocross Lites point?s chase with a convincing sweep of the motos. The win was the second of the year for Villopoto. Suzuki?s Broc Hepler, of Kittanning, Pa., returning from a broken foot, made a sparkling season debut with a solid 2-6 finish in the motos and a second place overall finish. Honda?s Josh Grant, of Riverside, Calif., was third (7-3).

KTM?s Mike Alessi, of Victorville, Calif., who finished eighth overall (16-4), retained his points lead, but saw his 25-point lead to seven over Villopoto, 153 to 146. Short is third with 135.

The Toyota AMA Motocross Championship, presented by FMF, will offer the riders a much needed break next weekend before heading to Buchanan, Mich., on July 1, for the Monster Energy/Kawasaki Red Bud National.
