After years of coming oh so close, Team Honda’s Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld finally won the Best in the Desert Laughlin Hare Scrambles last weekend. ‘We were on the XR650 for years, but that bike just wasn’t made for a race as tight as Laughlin,’ reported Johnny. ‘Last year we rode the CRF450 but the bike was brand new and we didn’t have any set-up time. This is the first year we’ve had everything right.’ The Honda win was made easier by several factors. One of those was the absence of Ty Davis and Russ Pearson. Both riders were banned by race organizer Casey Folks for rule infractions in the Parker event, held two weeks earlier. Pearson had broken down and Davis went out on the course to rescue him in violation of BLM restrictions. So Campbell and Hengveld had one less team of former Laughlin winners to contend with. Nick Pearson, who rode most of the event solo, and the Team Green duo of Shane Esposito and Destry Abbott suffered slight problems to come up short despite early challenges.
